Santorini barely bites. The night in Athens is the one to plan for.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
Wind and dry volcanic ground keep mosquitoes scarce on Santorini and Mykonos, and the Cyclades had no West Nile cases in Greece's record 2026 season. The ferry ports of Piraeus and Rafina sit in the Athens area, where that season was centered.
A few, and mostly at night. Santorini and Mykonos are dry, windy islands with little standing water, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) recorded no West Nile case from the Cyclades in its 2023–2026 data, even in 2026, Greece's worst season on record. Any bites tend to come on still nights by the pool or through an open bedroom window, and the West Nile exposure on a typical island trip sits in Athens and its ferry ports.
Why the islands stay quiet
ECDC reports West Nile by area, and the Cyclades count as one area covering Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and the rest of the group. It has not appeared among the affected areas in 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026. That held this year while Greece counted 457 locally acquired cases by October 21 and 46 deaths by October 7, centered on Athens and Attica and the farm plains of Thessaly and Central Macedonia. ECDC found no local dengue or chikungunya anywhere in Greece in 2026.
The tiger mosquito, the striped daytime biter that goes for ankles in gardens on Crete and Corfu, is missing too. On the April 2026 ECDC/EFSA map of the species, the Cyclades are marked absent, meaning field surveys looked and found none. Sand flies, which bite from dusk to dawn and spread leishmaniasis, do live on the islands, and CDC lists the disease for Greece. A September 2016 survey caught only 17 of them in 28 traps on Santorini, against 1,219 on Nisyros. CDC lists no malaria medicine for Greece, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required.
The night in Athens
Most Cyclades trips start or end in Athens, and the ferries leave from Piraeus or Rafina. Rafina is in East Attica, which had 103 West Nile cases by October 21, more than any other area in Greece, and the Piraeus and islands area had 3. West Nile is spread by Culex mosquitoes that bite in the evening and at night, mainly from July to September, and the 2026 season peaked in late August across Europe. For a summer night in Athens, Piraeus or Rafina, put repellent on before dinner outdoors and close the windows at dusk. There is no West Nile vaccine, and older travelers face the highest risk of severe illness. Our Greece briefing covers Athens and the mainland in full.
Still nights and open windows
On the islands, the summer meltemi wind and bare volcanic rock do most of the work. Expect the odd mosquito around hotel pools, garden bars and sheltered courtyards once the wind drops. Most bites come from the night-flying house mosquito, which finds its way into rooms with the windows open and the lights on, so the bedroom matters more than the beach. Close the shutters at dusk and keep the lights off until you're in, or run a plug-in vaporizer. Naxos and Paros are greener, with farmland and gardens inland, and have a reputation for more mosquitoes than Santorini.
Greece's mosquito season runs from May to October, and the mainland's West Nile season from July to September, so a May or October trip sits at the quiet edges of both.
Where you're staying
How the main stops compare for a June–September trip, including the Athens night most itineraries include.
Oia, Fira & Imerovigli
Wind-exposed cliff towns on bare volcanic rock, where a caldera-only stay may need repellent once or twice. Plunge pools and garden terraces can draw a few mosquitoes on still nights.
Kamari & Perissa
More sheltered beach towns on Santorini's east coast, with hotel gardens and pools where the odd mosquito turns up once the wind drops. Close the windows at dusk or run a plug-in vaporizer.
Mykonos Town & the south-coast beaches
The same dry, windy pattern as Santorini, with no tiger mosquitoes on the 2026 survey map. Garden bars and sheltered courtyards on windless nights are where any bites come.
Athens, Piraeus & Rafina
The center of Greece's record 2026 West Nile season, with 218 of the country's 445 cases by October 7 in Attica. From July to September, wear repellent to outdoor dinners and close the windows at dusk.
Adding Crete? It is greener and buggier, with daytime tiger mosquitoes and a handful of West Nile cases in 2026. Our Crete briefing has the details.
The Cyclades kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless for a poolside dinner and small enough for a beach bag. Use it on still evenings, and every evening in Athens from July to September.
- A plug-in vaporizer for rooms where the windows stay open at night. Most island hotels and supermarkets have them.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor forum threads and linked so you can read them in full. Neither is dated to a recent season, and island evenings change a lot with the wind.
- Santorini, Crete and Athens · late June
Asked whether mosquitoes would be bad in the last two weeks of June, a poster who had visited all three places in late June reported no mosquito problems anywhere; another said Santorini caused no trouble, that Athens sometimes has some, and recommended a pharmacy repellent lotion. TripAdvisor ↗
- Santorini and Naxos · summer
A poster said Santorini had the fewest mosquitoes of any place they had visited in Greece, which they put down to how dry the island is, and found Naxos had many more in summer. The post is roughly 16 years old. TripAdvisor ↗
As on any trip, a fever during or after it means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor where you were, including any nights in Athens.
Traveler questions
Do I need mosquito repellent in Santorini?
Bring one small bottle. Santorini's wind and dry volcanic ground keep mosquito numbers low, and a caldera-only stay may need repellent once or twice, on still evenings by a pool or on a garden terrace. If your room has no screens, close the shutters at dusk or run a plug-in vaporizer. Use it every evening on nights in Athens from July to September.
Is there West Nile virus on Santorini or Mykonos?
Not in recent years. ECDC's tables for 2023 through 2026 list no affected area covering the Cyclades, even in 2026, when Greece had a record 457 locally acquired cases by October 21. On a Cyclades trip, the West Nile exposure is in Athens and the ferry ports of Piraeus and Rafina from July to September, where dusk repellent should be routine.
Are there tiger mosquitoes on Santorini?
Surveys haven't found them. The April 2026 ECDC/EFSA map of the tiger mosquito marks the Cyclades as absent, meaning field surveys were done and the species wasn't found, while Crete, the Dodecanese and the mainland are marked established. That's why the daytime ankle bites common in gardens on Crete and Corfu are unlikely here.
Do I need malaria pills or vaccines for the Greek islands?
CDC recommends neither for Greece. It lists no malaria medicine, and the yellow fever vaccine is not recommended or required. There is no West Nile vaccine, so repellent is the tool for summer evenings in Athens. CDC's Greece page also lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn, and the same evening repellent covers them.
