Downtown Budapest is easy. Hungary bites at dusk by the water.
Few mosquitoes reach the center of Budapest, while riverside dinners, cruise decks and the Lake Balaton shore at night draw them. West Nile is endemic and reaches Budapest most years, and after 111 cases in 2024 the last two summers were quiet.
Yes, mostly at dusk by the water. Downtown Budapest tends to see few, while dinner by the Danube, an evening on a river cruise deck and a night on the shore of Lake Balaton are where Hungary's mosquitoes bite. West Nile is endemic and reaches Budapest most years, though only 5 cases were counted nationwide in 2026.
The Danube and Lake Balaton at dusk
A Budapest city break or a Danube river cruise tends to be light on bites. Away from the river and standing water, the center of Budapest tends to see few mosquitoes. Riverside evenings are buggier, and cruise experiences vary from one sailing to the next, with late summer the time travelers notice them most. Put repellent on before a riverside dinner, a dinner cruise or an evening on deck, and keep balcony doors closed after dark.
Lake Balaton has the stronger reputation. Mosquitoes over the shore at night are the classic complaint, especially on the shallow south shore around Siófok, and they tend to be worse after a wet spring. The lake runs a control program. In May 2026 biological larval treatment began at ponds near Siófok, the Hungarian news site Infostart reported, and in June 2025 adult mosquitoes were sprayed from trucks around Balaton, Lake Velence and Lake Tisza. The relief is brief. A 2026 field study found that ground spraying cut mosquitoes by about 47%, and only for a short time. Use repellent from dusk on, and pick a room with screens or air conditioning or run a plug-in vaporizer, since window screens tend to be rare.
The tiger mosquito adds a daytime shift. It is now established in 17 of Hungary's 20 regional units, on the April 2026 map from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). It bites in daylight, with peaks in the morning and late afternoon, so a garden lunch or a shady courtyard can bring bites too. Hungary has never reported a locally acquired case of dengue or chikungunya, both of which this mosquito can spread.
West Nile, quiet since 2024
West Nile is spread by Culex house mosquitoes, which bite in the evening and at night, and Hungary has been a central European hub for the virus since 2004. ECDC counted 111 locally acquired cases and 5 deaths in 2024, 23 of the cases in Budapest. The next two summers were much quieter, with 14 cases in 2025 and 5 in 2026 as of October 21, 2 of them in Budapest. Most infections cause no symptoms, and severe illness falls mostly on older adults. If you're 65 or older or have a weakened immune system, take the dusk routine most seriously in August and September, when cases cluster. Our guide to how long repellent lasts helps you time the evening top-up.
For forest hikes or camping, check for ticks every day; CDC's advice on the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is in the questions below. CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Hungary, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required.
Where you're going
How the main stops compare for a June–September trip.
Budapest
Downtown tends to see few mosquitoes, and riverside evenings are buggier. Budapest reports West Nile cases most years, 2 in 2026 and 23 in 2024, a low rate for the capital.
Danube river cruises: Budapest, the Danube Bend & Vienna
Experiences vary a lot from one sailing to the next, and ships moving at night may help. Wear repellent for dinners on deck and keep the balcony door closed after dark.
Lake Balaton: Siófok, Keszthely & Tihany
Mosquitoes over the shore at night are the classic complaint, and window screens tend to be rare. The Balaton counties had 8 West Nile cases in 2024 and none in 2025 or 2026.

The Hungary kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless for deck dinners and riverside terraces, and small enough for a day in port. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A plug-in vaporizer for Balaton rooms without screens and warm nights with the window open.
- A light long-sleeved layer for evenings on deck and by the lake.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from forum threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full, dated posts first. The undated ones are older, and an evening on the river or the lake changes a lot with the weather.
- Danube river cruise (Vienna to the Black Sea) · 2025
A poster who had just finished a Vienna-to-Black Sea cruise said insects were not an issue, and another said they had never met mosquitoes on European river cruises. Cruise Critic ↗
- Danube river cruise (Budapest to Nuremberg) · 2015
A poster who had cruised farther east said there were mosquitoes; they were not bitten but killed dozens and stopped opening their balcony doors, and placed the worst spot in Hungary. Another reply said the bite season is August to early October. Cruise Critic ↗
- Danube in Budapest
A reviewer called the Danube in Budapest very beautiful but full of mosquitoes on a dinner cruise, and suggested getting a table in the middle of the boat. TripAdvisor ↗
- Hotel Helikon, Keszthely (Lake Balaton)
A hotel reviewer said mosquitoes reign over the lake and the shore at night and that the rooms had no window screens. TripAdvisor ↗
- Siófok (Lake Balaton) · early summer
A poster said the Balaton resorts had more mosquitoes than usual that year because of unusually heavy rain, worst at the start of summer and much better later. TripAdvisor ↗
And the rule that outlasts every trip: any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Hungary.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes on a Danube river cruise?
Some, mostly at dusk and in late summer, and experiences vary a lot from one sailing to the next. Put repellent on before dinner on deck or an evening walk in port, and keep the balcony door closed after dark. West Nile reaches Budapest most years in small numbers, so the dusk habit is worth keeping on the Hungarian stretch.
Is West Nile a risk in Budapest?
A small one. Hungary has been a central European hub for West Nile since 2004, and Budapest reports cases most years. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control counted 111 locally acquired cases nationwide in 2024, 23 of them in Budapest, then 14 in 2025 and 5 in 2026 as of October 21. Most infections cause no symptoms, and severe illness falls mostly on older adults. Repellent at dusk and a closed room at night cover it.
How bad are the mosquitoes at Lake Balaton?
Bad enough on summer nights along the shore to plan for, especially on the shallow south shore around Siófok and after a wet spring. The lake runs a control program, with larval treatment from spring and spraying of adult mosquitoes in summer, which helps only for a short time. Use repellent from dusk on, and book a room with screens or air conditioning, or bring a plug-in vaporizer.
Do I need any vaccines or malaria pills for Hungary?
CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Hungary, which WHO certified malaria-free in 1964, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC recommends the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for travelers with extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for others doing outdoor activities where ticks are likely. If forest hiking or camping is on your list, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.
