Lapland's mosquitoes peak in July. Stockholm's islands are tick country.

The Kungsleden and the wetlands around Abisko swarm below the tree line in July, and September is close to bite-free. Around Stockholm the bite that matters is a tick, with tick-borne encephalitis running ahead of 2025, and central Sweden has a mosquito virus of its own in late August.

Yes. Swedish Lapland's trails and wetlands swarm with mosquitoes in July, and Stockholm gets a few on still evenings near greenery. Sweden has no local dengue, malaria or West Nile. The two bite-borne illnesses to know are tick-borne encephalitis, which ran ahead of 2025 around Stockholm in 2026, and Ockelbo disease, a mosquito-borne infection of central Sweden in late summer.

Stockholm, the archipelago and the 2026 tick rise

Mosquitoes in Stockholm and its archipelago are usually only a nuisance, posters say, out on calm evenings near green areas. The bite that matters here is a tick. Sweden counted about 500 cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in 2025, up from 384 in 2024, Swedish broadcaster SVT reported from Public Health Agency (Folkhälsomyndigheten) figures. By mid-September 2026, cases were running about 30% ahead of the same point in 2025, according to an insurer's September 22 press release based on agency data, with July the busiest month. Stockholm county had the largest increase, and the Uppsala region the highest rate.

CDC's Sweden page recommends the TBE vaccine for people with extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. If you'll spend days in an archipelago cottage, on the islands or hiking around Stockholm or Uppsala, take those plans to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. After any walk with bare legs, shower and check your whole body for ticks. CDC advises a repellent with 20% or more DEET when you need protection from ticks as well as mosquitoes.

Lapland in July, central Sweden in August

Swedish Lapland around Abisko and Kiruna, including Kebnekaise and the Kungsleden, can be heavy with mosquitoes in July, reviewers say, mostly in the wetlands below the tree line. Above it they are rare, and that covers most of the Nikkaluokta–Abisko section. Evenings are worst once the wind drops. Bring a head net and long sleeves for a July hike, and put on picaridin or DEET before you set out. By September the trails are nearly bite-free. Our picaridin vs. DEET comparison helps you choose.

Central Sweden has a mosquito virus of its own. Ockelbo disease is caused by Sindbis virus and brings a rash and joint pain. It occurs through most of Sweden, with the highest incidence in the central part, and cases fall between the third week of July and the first week of October, peaking in the second half of August. In 1981–88 about 31 patients a year were diagnosed, a 1991 study in the journal Epidemiology and Infection found, and antibody surveys suggest many infections go unreported. The floodplains of the River Dalälven are an endemic area. They also see mass emergences of floodwater mosquitoes, which researchers described in 2009 as a substantial nuisance across a belt of central Sweden. There is no vaccine, so wear repellent at dusk on a late-summer trip to Dalarna or Gävleborg.

The Dalälven floodplains are an endemic area for Ockelbo disease, which peaks in late August, and mass emergences of floodwater mosquitoes tend to make them buggy. Wear repellent at dusk.

The Sweden kit

Stockholm needs only the spray. Add the rest for Lapland trails and archipelago cottages.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays for calm evenings in Stockholm, Lapland hikes and dusk in central Sweden in August. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A fine-mesh head net for July on the Kungsleden below the tree line.
  • Permethrin for hiking clothes if you'll stay on the islands or hike around Stockholm and Uppsala: treat trousers and socks at home 48 hours before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full. None is dated to this season, and the wind, the weather and the tree line change the picture.

  • Kungsleden (Nikkaluokta to Abisko) · July

Asked about mosquitoes on the Nikkaluokta-Abisko section in July, a reply said they are rare above the tree line, so for most of the hike they would not be a problem. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Kungsleden · September

A reviewer who hiked the trail in the fall said September is best for autumn colors, good weather, a lack of crowds and a lack of mosquitoes. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Stockholm archipelago · summer evenings

A longtime Stockholm poster said archipelago mosquitoes are usually only a nuisance, though they can bother you in the evening when it is less windy and near green areas. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Stockholm archipelago

In a thread on ticks, a poster who spends a lot of time in the archipelago said they find a tick only every 2-3 years and that the archipelago is where most of them are; others advised showering and checking the body after time in nature with bare legs. TripAdvisor ↗

CDC recommends no malaria medicine and no yellow fever vaccine for Sweden. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Sweden, including any time on the islands or in central Sweden in late summer.

Traveler questions

When are mosquitoes worst in Swedish Lapland?

July. Reviewers describe heavy mosquitoes in the wetlands below the tree line around Abisko, Kebnekaise and the Kungsleden, while a forum reply said they are rare above it, which covers most of the Nikkaluokta–Abisko section. Evenings are worst once the wind drops. For a July hike, bring a head net, long sleeves and a picaridin 20% or DEET 20–30% repellent, or go in September, when the trails are nearly bite-free.

Do I need the TBE vaccine for Sweden?

It depends on your plans. CDC's Sweden page recommends the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for people who will have extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for people doing outdoor activities where ticks are likely. Days in archipelago cottages, on the islands or on hikes in the Stockholm or Uppsala regions are the plans to take to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. A Stockholm city break with a Lapland hike carries low risk.

What is Ockelbo disease?

A mosquito-borne infection caused by Sindbis virus that brings a rash and joint pain. Cases fall between the third week of July and the first week of October, peaking in the second half of August, with the highest incidence in central Sweden. The joint pain can last: after an unexpected 2013 outbreak, 39% of patients still had it 6–8 months later, the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal reported. There is no vaccine, so repellent at dusk is the protection on a late-summer trip to Dalarna or Gävleborg.

Are there mosquitoes in Stockholm?

Some, on calm evenings near green areas, posters say, and the city itself is lighter than the countryside. In the archipelago the bigger item is ticks, and Stockholm county had Sweden's largest rise in TBE cases in 2026. After time in nature with bare legs, shower and check your whole body.
