Finland's mosquitoes live in Lapland's forests. Helsinki barely has any.

The Lapland countryside swarms from late June through July, and around Midsummer there's no dusk to wait out. The bite-borne illnesses are regional, with ticks carrying TBE on the southern islands and a late-summer mosquito virus in the east.

Yes, and plenty of them in Lapland's forests and bogs from late June through July. Helsinki and the towns are nearly mosquito-free, and Finland has no dengue, malaria or West Nile. The two bite-borne illnesses worth a minute are tick-borne encephalitis on the southern islands and Pogosta disease in the east in late summer.

Lapland's midsummer swarms

Forum posters place Lapland's mosquito season from early June to early September, peaking in July. At Midsummer the far north is only getting going, while southern Finland is largely done by July. The forested, boggy countryside around Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä is where the swarms are. Open fell tops, windy lakeshores and beaches are much better, and the towns are mostly fine.

The midnight sun changes the routine. Around Midsummer the sun barely sets in Lapland, so there is no dusk to schedule around. Plan by the weather instead. Mosquitoes like warm, wet, windless days, and wind and cold keep them down. Put on a DEET or picaridin repellent (picaridin is also called icaridin) before any forest walk, fishing trip or berry-picking outing, cover up, and bring a head net for still days. Late summer brings fewer mosquitoes and more midges, posters say, and one poster reports horseflies on the open fells around Saariselkä. Our picaridin vs. DEET comparison helps you choose.

Two bite-borne viruses, both regional

Pogosta disease is caused by Sindbis virus, spread by mosquitoes. Finland diagnoses it every year in late summer and early autumn, mostly in August and September, with cases concentrated in eastern Finland, especially North Karelia. Large outbreaks have come roughly every seven years. The last, in 2021, had 566 laboratory-confirmed human cases, the Eurosurveillance journal reported. There is no vaccine, so a late-summer trip to the eastern lakes around Savonlinna, Koli and Joensuu calls for repellent whenever you're outdoors in the countryside.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the tick-borne one, and its risk is focal, in archipelago and coastal areas, mainly in the south. Kustavi, Parainen (Pargas) and Åland had the highest incidence in 2020–24, Finnish broadcaster Yle reported, and Finland's 2026 TBE vaccination areas include islands off Helsinki and Espoo. Helsinki University Hospital reported 195 cases nationally in 2024 and more than 220 registered by the end of November 2025.

CDC's Finland page recommends the TBE vaccine for people who will have extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for people who might do outdoor activities where ticks are likely. If you're staying at an archipelago or island cottage, or hiking there, ask a travel clinic about it 4–6 weeks before you fly. Use repellent and check for ticks daily either way. The TBE vaccine does not protect against Lyme borreliosis, which ticks also carry.

Forests and bogs swarm in late June and July, worst on still, warm days. Towns are mostly fine and open fell tops are easier, posters say.

Nearly mosquito-free in town, posters say. An island cottage stay off Helsinki or Espoo brings tick exposure, so check for ticks after a day outdoors.

Kustavi, Parainen (Pargas) and Åland had Finland's highest TBE incidence in 2020–24. A cottage or hiking stay here is the case for asking a travel clinic about the TBE vaccine.

Pogosta disease centers on eastern Finland, especially North Karelia, mostly in August and September. Most years between outbreaks are low; the last big one was in 2021.

The Finland kit

Helsinki needs almost nothing. This is for Lapland and the islands.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays for Lapland's forest walks, fishing and berry picking, and for days outdoors in the archipelago. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A fine-mesh head net for still, warm days in Lapland's forests and bogs.

CDC recommends no malaria medicine and no yellow fever vaccine for Finland. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Finland, including any time in the eastern lakes or on the islands.

Traveler questions

When are mosquitoes worst in Lapland?

Late June and July. Forum posters place the season from early June to early September with a July peak, and say the far north is only getting going at Midsummer. August is easier, with fewer mosquitoes and more midges. Within any week, still, warm, damp days are the bad ones and windy or cold days are much better.

Are there mosquitoes in Helsinki?

Very few in town, posters say, and southern Finland's season is largely over by July. The bite to think about near Helsinki is a tick on the islands. If you rent a cottage in the archipelago off Helsinki or Espoo, use repellent outdoors and check for ticks each evening.

Do I need the TBE vaccine for Finland?

It depends on your plans. CDC's Finland page recommends the vaccine for people who will have extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for people who might do outdoor activities where ticks are likely. Archipelago and coastal cottages in the southwest, Åland and the islands around Helsinki and Espoo are where that applies, so take those plans to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. A typical Helsinki-and-Lapland itinerary carries low risk.

Is Lapland buggier than Iceland?

Yes, over a much wider area. Most of Iceland has hardly any biting insects, and the exception is Lake Mývatn in June and July, with swarming midges and biting black flies. Lapland's forests and bogs bite across the region in late June and July. Our Iceland briefing covers Mývatn if you're combining the two.
