Beach, lagoon or jungle? Cancún's bites depend on the setting.

Most of what bites on the Riviera Maya is the day-flying dengue mosquito, plus tiny midges at dusk. Quintana Roo's dengue count kept climbing into September 2026, but winter is the low season, and a breezy beachfront is the easiest place to be.

If you read nothing else

Dengue is the risk to plan around, and Quintana Roo's count was still climbing as of mid-September 2026. The mosquito that spreads it bites in daylight, so repellent goes on over sunscreen at breakfast, again after swimming and again before sunset. The CDC does not recommend malaria pills for Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Tulum or Cozumel. Bites tend to cluster at dusk, on the lagoon side, in heavily watered resort gardens and on jungle or cenote trips.

Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel all sit in Quintana Roo, the most visited part of Mexico. Along the whole coast, the disease picture is endemic dengue, a small number of local chikungunya cases and no CDC malaria-pill advice. How much biting you notice is another matter. It depends on the breeze, the greenery around you and the time of day more than on the town you picked. This page covers the Caribbean coast, and the Mexico briefing covers Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City and the south.

Beach side, lagoon side, jungle side

Cancún's Hotel Zone is a long, narrow strip with the Caribbean on one side and a lagoon on the other. The lagoon side has a reputation for more bites than the beach side, where the sea breeze blows. Resorts with heavily watered landscaping tend to have more mosquitoes wherever they sit, and so do spots set back from the coastal breeze. Tulum's hotels sit closer to the jungle, and its day trips head inland to cenotes and mangroves, which are likely bite hotspots late in the day.

The breezy side

Beachfront rooms in the Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos

A steady sea breeze is your best ally. It grounds biting midges and tends to keep mosquitoes down.

  • Daytime repellent still matters, since dengue mosquitoes bite by day
  • Heavily watered gardens are the spots to watch
  • Calm evenings let midges bite on the sand
The sheltered side

The lagoon side, Tulum's jungle hotels, cenotes and mangroves

Less wind and more greenery, which tends to mean more biting from late afternoon on.

  • Repellent before sunset, every evening
  • Long sleeves and light trousers for dinner
  • Permethrin-treated clothes for jungle and cenote days
  • Balcony doors closed and the air-conditioning on at night

Mosquitoes have company on this coast. Tiny biting midges, called jejenes locally and no-see-ums in the US, live near lagoons and beaches and are most active at dawn and dusk. They are weak fliers, so a breeze grounds them and a still evening lets them bite. Picaridin and DEET both deter them. Our Barbados sandfly guide explains how they behave.

Dengue and chikungunya in Quintana Roo

Dengue is endemic in Quintana Roo. Across Mexico, 2026 has been a quieter year than 2025, with national counts well below last year's. In Quintana Roo, though, the count was still climbing as of mid-September 2026, according to federal surveillance reports. The CDC puts Mexico's dengue peak at May through November, the rainy months, and a winter trip falls after it.

Chikungunya spreads through the same day-biting mosquito. Locally acquired cases in Mexico are concentrated in Chiapas and Quintana Roo. In 2025, Quintana Roo had more of them than any other state, and through early April 2026 it had 6 of the country's 15 confirmed local cases, with no deaths. The numbers are small, and the daytime routine that protects you from dengue covers chikungunya too. The CDC says the chikungunya vaccine may be considered for stays of about six months or more, a question for a travel clinic if you're planning a long stay.

Malaria takes one paragraph. The CDC does not recommend prevention medicine for Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Tulum or Cozumel. Its Mexico recommendation covers Campeche, Chiapas and southern Chihuahua, so a side trip to Calakmul or Palenque changes the picture. If either is on your route, see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

The resort day

The dengue mosquito bites in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon. Our dengue & Zika daily routine has the full schedule. On this coast it comes down to three habits.

Breakfast
Sunscreen, then repellent

Before the beach, the pool or the ruins. Sunscreen goes on first; repellent sits on top.

After swimming
Reapply

Sea, pool and cenote water shorten any label's protection time. Count a long swim as a reset.

Late afternoon
Cover the dusk shift

The second dengue peak overlaps with midge hour. Fresh repellent and long sleeves before dinner.

How long one coat lasts depends on the product and its strength. Our repellent duration guide has the numbers.

Winter is the low season

December to April is the dry season and the low point for dengue in Mexico. Travelers tend to describe January and February as quiet months for mosquitoes, from the Hotel Zone to Tulum's beaches, and the heavier complaints come from the wetter months or just after rain. Lower risk is still some risk. Aedes keep biting by day in winter, especially after an unseasonal rain, so the morning habit stays.

In late October 2026, PAHO reported dengue rising again in Central America and flagged an expected El Niño intensification. If your trip is still weeks away, check the CDC's Mexico page again shortly before you fly.

The Riviera Maya kit

The first covers a beach week. Pick the second if you prefer a plant-based repellent, and add the third for Tulum's jungle and cenote days.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and deters midges as well as mosquitoes. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus 30%: the plant-based option among EPA-registered repellents. Not for children under 3.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for day-trip clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers at home 48 hours before you fly. Treated fabric repels and kills mosquitoes on contact through several washes. It goes on clothing, never on skin.

Keep one rule after you get home. A fever during the trip or within two weeks of returning means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in Quintana Roo. That detail gets you the right tests quickly.

Traveler questions

Are there mosquitoes in Cancún in January?

Fewer than in the rainy months. January falls in the dry season, the low point for dengue, and travelers tend to describe it as a quiet month for mosquitoes, though rain in the preceding weeks makes a difference. The dengue mosquito still bites by day, so keep the morning repellent habit.

Do I need malaria pills for Cancún or Tulum?

The CDC does not recommend malaria prevention medicine for Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Tulum or Cozumel. Its recommendation for Mexico covers Campeche, Chiapas and southern Chihuahua. If you are adding Calakmul or Palenque to the trip, see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

Is the Hotel Zone better than the lagoon side for mosquitoes?

The beach side usually has the edge. It gets the sea breeze, which grounds biting midges and tends to keep mosquitoes down, while the lagoon side has a reputation for more bites, especially at dusk. Wherever you stay, keep balcony doors closed after sunset and use the air-conditioning.

Is there chikungunya in Cancún?

Quintana Roo is one of the two Mexican states where locally acquired chikungunya is concentrated, with 6 confirmed cases through early April 2026. It spreads through the same daytime mosquito as dengue, so the same routine covers both. The CDC says the chikungunya vaccine may be considered for stays of about six months or more.

Is it safe to visit Cancún while pregnant?

Zika risk in Mexico is present but low, and there is no active Zika travel notice. The CDC advises pregnant travelers to talk with a healthcare provider about the trip and to strictly prevent mosquito bites and sexual transmission.

What about a cruise stop in Cozumel?

Cozumel is part of Quintana Roo, so the daytime dengue mosquito is the one to think about. A dry-season port day likely means limited exposure. Put repellent on before you leave the ship and top it up after swimming.
