Are there mosquitoes in Mallorca? Yes, and Alcúdia gets the most.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
The tiger mosquito bites by day around villas and hotel gardens on all three islands. Around the Bay of Alcúdia, evenings near the S'Albufera wetland bite harder. The disease picture is calm, with no local dengue on the islands since 2022 and West Nile only in animals on Menorca.
Yes. The Asian tiger mosquito is established on Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, and it bites by day around villa patios, potted plants, hedges and hotel gardens. Around the Bay of Alcúdia and Playa de Muro, evenings bring a second round of biting that visitors and hotels blame on the S'Albufera wetland nearby. The disease picture is calm, with no local dengue on the islands since a 2022 cluster on Ibiza and West Nile found only in animals on Menorca.
Daytime on every island, evenings at Alcúdia
The tiger mosquito has been on Mallorca since at least 2013, when it was caught at the Port of Palma, and Spain's Ministry of Health has considered it established in all five of Ibiza's municipalities since 2015. It bites in daylight, peaking in the morning and late afternoon, and breeds in small pools of standing water, so on a villa terrace, empty the plant saucers and buckets. Repellent goes on over sunscreen in the morning and again before late-afternoon drinks. Picaridin 20%, DEET 20–30%, oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD 30%, and IR3535 all work, and our daytime mosquito routine has the full schedule.
The Bay of Alcúdia adds a second problem. Forum posters and hotel reviewers in Port d'Alcúdia and Playa de Muro repeatedly blame S'Albufera, the nearby wetland, and its canals and lakes for biting in the evening and through the night. Posters say it varies a lot by year and by person, and rooms near the lagoon or marsh tend to get more than those by the port, the beach or the old town. If you stay there, cover up in the evening, keep balcony doors shut and run a plug-in vaporizer. Palma, Ibiza and Menorca have the tiger mosquito but no comparable wetland reputation.
Spain's Ministry of Health gives the tiger mosquito's active period as May to November. June to September is the main biting season, with the most bites in July and August, and Alcúdia posters say mosquitoes stay active to the end of October. A May or late-October trip still calls for daytime repellent, with fewer bites.
Ibiza's 2022 dengue cluster, and since
The Balearics' only locally acquired dengue on record was on Ibiza in 2022. In February 2023 Germany reported a confirmed case, a probable case and 4 compatible cases among German residents who had stayed in the same Ibiza locality between August 23 and 30 and between October 6 and 13, 2022, according to Spain's Ministry of Health. ECDC, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, lists 6 cases. There has been none on the islands since, and ECDC recorded no local dengue or chikungunya anywhere in Spain in 2025 or in 2026 as of October 21.
West Nile has reached the islands only in animals. Menorca had the Balearics' first animal outbreak in 2025 and another in 2026, according to ECDC and the European Food Safety Authority, and there have been no human cases. Spain's 2026 human cases, 145 by ECDC's count as of October 21, were in Andalusia and Extremadura, and the Spain briefing covers that season around Seville.
CDC has no travel notice for Spain and recommends no malaria medicine, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC also lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn, which your evening repellent covers.
Where you're staying
Here is how the islands compare for a June–September trip.
Palma
The tiger mosquito has been here since at least 2013, when it was caught at the port. Expect daytime bites in gardens and on patios. No local dengue, chikungunya or human West Nile has been recorded.
Alcúdia Bay & Playa de Muro
Mallorca's most-cited mosquito area, with evening biting blamed on the S'Albufera wetland and its canals. Rooms near the marsh tend to get more, so cover up after dark and keep balcony doors shut.
Ibiza
Site of the Balearics' only local dengue cluster, 6 cases among German visitors in August–October 2022, with none since. The tiger mosquito is established island-wide, so daytime repellent applies.
Menorca
West Nile was found in animals in 2025 and again in 2026, with no human cases. Expect the same daytime tiger mosquito around villas and gardens.
The Balearics kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat and layers over sunscreen. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A full-size backup in the checked bag for a family or two weeks.
- A plug-in vaporizer for a room near S'Albufera or a villa without screens.

What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full. Only one is dated, and bites vary a lot by year, by person and by how close you sleep to the wetland.
- Seaclub Alcudia Mediterranean Resort, Port d'Alcúdia · August · 2022
An August 2022 guest praised the apartment, food and staff but said mosquitoes bit the family despite repellents, and linked whether they would return to the spraying of the nearby canals. TripAdvisor ↗
- Mallorca (villa near Pollensa)
A group staying at a villa reported that all five adults were bitten by mosquitoes or biting flies during the day and evening, and that a DEET repellent had little effect. Another poster said bites came through clothing; others blamed the daytime tiger mosquito, which rests around potted plants and hedges. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor where you stayed and that you were bitten.
Traveler questions
Is Alcúdia bad for mosquitoes?
It has the strongest reputation on Mallorca. Forum posters and hotel reviewers in Port d'Alcúdia and Playa de Muro blame the S'Albufera wetland and its canals for evening and night biting, and say it varies a lot by year and by person. Rooms near the lagoon or marsh tend to get more than those by the port, the beach or the old town. Cover up in the evening, use repellent on the rest, keep balcony doors shut and run a plug-in vaporizer.
Was there dengue on Ibiza?
Yes, once. In February 2023 Germany reported a confirmed case, a probable case and 4 compatible cases among German residents who had stayed in the same Ibiza locality in late August and early October 2022, according to Spain's Ministry of Health; ECDC lists 6 cases. The ministry places Spain's 2019 local cases in Catalonia and Madrid, not on Ibiza. There has been no local dengue in the Balearics since, and none anywhere in Spain in 2025 or 2026 as of October 21.
When is mosquito season in Mallorca?
Spain's Ministry of Health puts the tiger mosquito's active period at May to November. June to September is the main biting season, with the most bites in July and August, and Alcúdia posters say mosquitoes stay active to the end of October. The ministry rates the risk of local dengue as moderate from May to November and low from December to April.
Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for Mallorca or Ibiza?
CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Spain, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC has no travel notice for Spain. Its Spain page lists dengue and leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn, with the advice to avoid bug bites.
