In Lithuania, the tick matters more than the mosquito.

Vilnius and the Klaipėda cruise port are light on bites, and mosquitoes arrive in June at the Trakai lakes and on the Curonian Spit's dunes. Lithuania had the EU's highest rate of tick-borne encephalitis every year from 2018 to 2022, so forest walks call for a tick routine.

Yes, from June, around the lakes and in the forests and dunes of the Curonian Spit. Vilnius and the Klaipėda cruise port are light, and Lithuania has never reported a local case of dengue, chikungunya, West Nile or malaria. The bite that matters most comes from a tick, because Lithuania has the EU's highest rate of tick-borne encephalitis.

Disease risk NegligibleNo local dengue, chikungunya, West Nile or malaria has ever been reported; ticks carry TBE throughout the country, at the EU's highest rate.

The EU's highest TBE rate

In its report for 2022, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control ranked Lithuania first in the EU and EEA for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), as in each of the four years before. It counted 377 confirmed cases that year, 13.4 per 100,000 people, after 711 in 2019 and 679 in 2020. TBE occurs throughout the country, with the north, northeast and center long regarded as its main foci. Treat any forest or meadow walk as tick country, including the pine forest on the Curonian Spit and the woods around Vilnius.

For travelers to TBE-endemic areas, CDC's Lithuania page says: "TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found." Cycling the spit, hiking, camping or a countryside stay are the plans to take to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. CDC also advises a repellent with 20% or more DEET when you need protection from ticks as well as mosquitoes, and a check of your entire body for ticks after time outdoors. A fever or headache in the weeks after a tick bite means a doctor visit.

Mosquitoes on the spit and at the lakes

Mosquitoes arrive in June, so a late-April or May walk on the Curonian Spit is ahead of them. In summer they tend to collect in the spit's pine forest and up on the dunes around Nida on still days, while the breezy beach tends to be lighter. A forum poster picked July for swimming there, expecting the sea to pass 68 °F (20 °C), and July is mosquito season too, so carry a spray up the dunes.

Trakai, the lake and forest country around the Island Castle close to Vilnius, is typical mosquito habitat, and evening bites on the shore and on the water are likely. Biting midges come out in late spring. Researchers trapped 22 species of Culicoides midges in Verkiai Regional Park near Vilnius, most abundant in May and June and first appearing once the mean daily temperature passed 50 °F (10 °C), the journal Parasitology Research reported in 2021. Midges are weak fliers that go for ankles and lower legs at dawn and dusk, and our Ireland briefing explains how they behave. Picaridin or DEET covers both insects. Our picaridin vs. DEET comparison helps you choose.

Where you're going

city

Vilnius

Disease risk NegligibleBite nuisance Occasional

The Old Town tends to be light. Verkiai Regional Park near the city has biting midges in May and June, and its woods mean a tick check after a walk.

lake

Lake and forest country around the Island Castle, close to Vilnius, where evening mosquitoes on the shore and on the water are likely. Spray before a sunset boat ride.

Pine forest and high dunes, with mosquitoes up on the dunes in July and the breezy beach tending to be lighter. Forest walks and bike rides here mean tick checks.

cruise port

Klaipėda & the cruise port

Disease risk NegligibleBite nuisance Hardly any

The city and port tend to be light. A shore excursion to the Curonian Spit brings the spit's mosquitoes and ticks, so pack a spray for that day.

The Lithuania kit

Built around ticks, with the spray doubling for the spit's mosquitoes.
  • Permethrin for clothing if you'll hike, camp or cycle the Curonian Spit. Treat trousers and socks at home before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays for the dunes, the Trakai shore at dusk and forest walks. The 3.4 oz bottles fit a carry-on.

CDC recommends no malaria medicine and no yellow fever vaccine for Lithuania. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Lithuania, along with any tick bite.

Traveler questions

Is the Curonian Spit buggy in summer?

It can be on still days. Mosquitoes arrive in June and tend to collect in the pine forest and up on the dunes around Nida, while the breezy beach tends to be lighter. Spray before a dune or forest walk and check for ticks after one. If you plan to cycle the spit or camp there, take that plan to a travel clinic and ask about the TBE vaccine.

Do I need the TBE vaccine for Lithuania?

It depends on your plans. CDC recommends the TBE vaccine for people who will have extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for people who might do outdoor activities where ticks are likely. TBE occurs throughout Lithuania, so hiking, camping, cycling or a countryside stay anywhere in the country is the plan to take to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. A Vilnius city break involves little time in tick habitat.

I'm stopping in Klaipėda on a cruise. Do I need repellent?

For the city and the port, probably not. If your excursion crosses to the Curonian Spit between June and September, bring a picaridin or DEET spray for the dunes and pine forest, and check for ticks when you're back on board.

Are there mosquitoes in Vilnius?

A few, and the Old Town tends to be light. Researchers have found biting midges in a wooded park near the city in May and June, and midges go for ankles and lower legs at dawn and dusk. The same woods mean a tick check after a walk. The Trakai lakes, close to the city, are the buggier evening trip. Our Ireland briefing explains how midges behave.
