Kraków and Warsaw are easy. The northeast's lakes and forests bite.

City breaks in Kraków, Warsaw and Gdańsk need little more than a small spray. The Masurian Lakes and the Białowieża Forest are where visitors meet heavy mosquitoes and midges, and the same northeast is Poland's tick-borne encephalitis country.

Yes, though a city break barely meets them. Kraków, Warsaw and Gdańsk produce few mosquito complaints, while reviewers describe the Masurian Lakes and the Białowieża Forest as heavily infested with mosquitoes and midges. Poland has no local dengue or malaria, and in the northeast the bite to plan for is a tick that can carry tick-borne encephalitis.

Disease risk NegligibleNo local dengue, chikungunya or malaria and a single probable West Nile case ever, in 2024; ticks carry TBE, mostly in the northeast.

The Masurian Lakes and Białowieża

Poland's buggy country is the forested northeast. Around Giżycko, Mikołajki and Mrągowo in the Masurian Lake District, reviewers describe the woods and lakeshores as heavily infested with mosquitoes and midges, and the Wolf's Lair (Wilczy Szaniec) site in the forest near Kętrzyn gets the same warning. Białowieża Forest, in Podlaskie province in the far east, is the other one, and insects there can be overwhelming in season. These forest and wetland mosquitoes tend to be worst in shade, at dusk and early in the summer.

Put repellent on before you set out and reapply it through the day. Wear long sleeves and pants at dusk, and choose lodging with screens or air conditioning. On a guided walk into Białowieża's strict reserve, apply repellent before you go in. Picaridin 20%, DEET 20–30%, oil of lemon eucalyptus 30% and IR3535 all work, and our picaridin vs. DEET comparison helps you choose.

Ticks and TBE in the northeast

The same lakes and forests are Poland's tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) country. Polish news coverage of the national infectious-disease report for 2025 put Podlaskie, home of Białowieża, first for cases, followed by Mazowieckie, the province around Warsaw, and Warmińsko-Mazurskie, which holds the Masurian Lakes. Nationwide, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) counted 367 confirmed cases in 2022, up from 181 in 2021. The same ticks can also carry Lyme disease. Ticks live in forests and meadows, so a city itinerary keeps you mostly away from them.

CDC's Poland page recommends the TBE vaccine for people with extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. If you'll hike, camp or canoe around the Masurian Lakes or Białowieża, take those plans to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly. Outdoors, CDC advises a repellent with 20% or more DEET when you need protection from both ticks and mosquitoes. Check your whole body for ticks after every day in the woods.

June to September covers the bite season. Ticks keep going after it ends. Across the EU, 90% of TBE cases in 2022 began between June and November, ECDC found. A May or October trip tends to bring fewer mosquitoes and still calls for tick checks.

The rest of the list is short. Poland has never reported a locally acquired case of dengue or chikungunya, and the tiger mosquito that can spread them is not established there, according to ECDC's April 2026 map. The country's only locally acquired West Nile case was a single probable one in 2024. CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Poland, which WHO certified malaria-free in 1967, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required.

The Poland kit

A small spray covers the cities. Add the rest for the lakes and forests of the northeast.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless for city evenings and strong enough for the lakes, where you'll reapply often. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin for hiking and canoeing clothes: treat pants and socks at home 48 hours before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.
  • A light long-sleeved shirt and long pants for dusk at the lakes and in Białowieża.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor reviews, newest first, and linked so you can read them in full. Forest insects rise and fall with the weather and the time of summer, so one visit won't match every week.

  • Białowieża (wildlife tour) · 2025

A visitor on a Białowieża wildlife tour advised taking repellent because mosquitoes can be troublesome. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Białowieża National Park strict reserve · 2017

A reviewer of a guided walk in the strict reserve said insects can be overwhelming depending on the season, and that repellent cannot be used once inside the park, so it has to be applied beforehand. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Wolf's Lair (Wilczy Szaniec), Gierłoż, Masuria

A reviewer said the heavily forested area with many lakes is heavily infested with midges and mosquitoes, and advised bringing strong repellent and reapplying it often. TripAdvisor ↗

Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Poland, including any time in the forests and lake country of the northeast.

Traveler questions

Are there mosquitoes in Kraków and Warsaw?

A few. City breaks in Kraków, Warsaw and Gdańsk rarely draw mosquito complaints. No West Nile or tiger mosquito activity has been reported in either city. A small picaridin or DEET spray for an evening in a park or by the river is all most visitors need.

How bad are the mosquitoes at the Masurian Lakes?

Bad enough to plan for. Reviewers describe the heavily forested lake country around Giżycko, Mikołajki and Mrągowo, including the Wolf's Lair site near Kętrzyn, as heavily infested with mosquitoes and midges. Put on a strong repellent before you head out and reapply it often, wear long sleeves and pants at dusk, and choose a room with screens or air conditioning.

Do I need the TBE vaccine for Poland?

It depends on your plans. CDC's Poland page recommends the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for people who will have extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for people who might do outdoor activities where ticks are likely. In Poland that mostly means hiking, camping or canoeing in the northeast, around the Masurian Lakes and Białowieża. A city itinerary keeps you mostly away from ticks. If the lakes or forests are on your list, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

Is there West Nile or dengue in Poland?

Barely, and no. Poland's only locally acquired West Nile case was a single probable one in 2024, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control lists none in 2025 or so far in 2026. Poland has never reported a locally acquired case of dengue or chikungunya, and the tiger mosquito that can spread them is not established there.
