Are there mosquitoes on the Amalfi Coast? Yes, on the terraces.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
The Asian tiger mosquito lives in the gardens, lemon groves and potted plants of every terraced town on the coast, and August and September bring the most bites. Salerno province had one West Nile case in 2026, and Ischia had a 2-case dengue cluster in September.
Yes. The Asian tiger mosquito lives along the whole coast, and it waits on the terraces, in the hotel gardens and in the lemon groves where visitors spend their days, from Positano and Ravello to Sorrento and Anacapri. It bites by day, night biters take over after dark, and August and September tend to bring the most. Disease is a small part of the picture, with a single West Nile case in Salerno province in 2026 and a 2-case dengue cluster on Ischia in September.
Terraces, gardens and lemon groves
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) says the tiger mosquito is established in most of Italy below about 2,000 feet (600 m), which takes in the coast's terraced towns. It tends to breed in plant saucers, cisterns and garden containers, so a terrace lined with potted plants suits it well. Forum posters say mosquitoes are fewer right by the sea than inland, turn up wherever there are plants or bushes, and are worst in the evening and after dark.
Put repellent on your ankles and arms before a garden lunch, then again before a terrace dinner. Picaridin 20% and DEET 20–30% both work. Many rooms open straight onto a terrace and tend to lack screens, so choose one with air conditioning and sleep with the doors shut, or bring a plug-in vaporizer.
June is the easiest month. Bites build through July and, by travelers' accounts, peak in August and September, which fits the late-July tiger mosquito peak in the northern Italy data ECDC cites. Late September and October nights are cooler and bring fewer mosquitoes, though not none. The tiger mosquito is out from May, so a spring trip still calls for repellent on warm afternoons.
West Nile near Naples, dengue on Ischia
The Amalfi Coast, from Positano to Maiori, is in Salerno province, while Sorrento, Capri and Ischia belong to Napoli province. Italy's national health institute (ISS) counted 41 locally acquired West Nile cases in Campania in 2026 as of October 21, with 22 in Caserta province, 18 in Napoli and 1 in Salerno, a blood donor. In 2025 Campania had 133, including 80 in Napoli province and 8 in Salerno, according to ECDC and the European Food Safety Authority. No town breakdown is published, so it isn't known whether any were on the coast or the islands. West Nile travels on Culex mosquitoes, which bite in the evening and at night. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older.
Ischia had the first locally acquired dengue in Campania in ECDC's records, a 2-case cluster with onsets between September 15 and 26, 2026. ECDC still listed it as active on October 21, because it keeps a cluster open until 45 days after the last onset. ISS reported no new onsets in the 24 days to October 20. Campania has never had local chikungunya, and Salerno province had no local dengue or chikungunya from 2023 to 2026. Dengue spreads through the daytime tiger mosquito, so the terrace routine covers it.
CDC has no travel notice for Italy and recommends no malaria medicine, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. The Italy briefing covers the country's 2025–26 outbreaks in full.
Where you're staying
Here is how the coast and the islands compare for a June–September trip.
Positano
Steep terraces and gardens suit the tiger mosquito, so repellent goes on before lunch outdoors and again at dusk. Salerno province's single 2026 West Nile case isn't tied to any town.
Amalfi & Ravello
Ravello's villa gardens are the likeliest daytime spots, and a terrace dinner in Amalfi calls for fresh repellent at dusk.
Sorrento & the peninsula
Part of Napoli province, which had 18 West Nile cases in 2026 with no town breakdown. Citrus groves and hotel gardens are where the tiger mosquito is likely to find you.
Capri & Ischia
Ischia had Campania's first local dengue in ECDC's records, 2 cases with onsets in late September 2026. Nothing has been reported on Capri.

The Amalfi Coast kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and fits a day bag for the boat to Capri. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- Light long sleeves and socks for dinners on a terrace.
- A plug-in vaporizer for a terrace room without air conditioning.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and linked so you can read them in full. None is dated, and bites on this coast vary a lot from one person and one terrace to the next.
- Amalfi Coast · September
In an older thread, one poster said they were eaten alive in September and told people prone to bites to cover up in the evening and use a repellent; another said their group of four had hardly any trouble with mosquitoes on two trips. TripAdvisor ↗
- Maiori · late September
A reply said the cooler nights of late September mean fewer mosquitoes, though not none, for people who usually get bitten. TripAdvisor ↗
- Positano (Path of the Gods)
In a thread about hiking the Path of the Gods, a poster mentioned that mosquitoes had been out quite heavily recently and advised bringing whatever helps with bites. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. A fever, rash or joint pain during or within two weeks after the trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were bitten by mosquitoes in Campania.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes on the Amalfi Coast?
Yes. The tiger mosquito is established along the whole coast and bites by day on terraces, in hotel gardens and in lemon groves, with night biters taking over after dark. Travelers describe August and September as the worst months and June as the easiest. Use repellent before garden lunches and terrace dinners, and pick a room with air conditioning so the terrace door can stay shut at night.
Is there dengue on Ischia?
Ischia had a 2-case locally acquired dengue cluster in 2026, with onsets from September 15 to 26, the first local dengue in Campania in ECDC's records. ECDC still listed it as active on October 21, since it keeps a cluster open until 45 days after the last onset, while Italy's national health institute reported no new onsets in the 24 days to October 20. CDC has no dengue travel notice for Italy. The tiger mosquito spreads dengue in daylight, so daytime repellent is the precaution.
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast for fewer mosquitoes?
June. Bites build through July and tend to peak in August and September, which is also when Campania's West Nile cases and the 2026 Ischia dengue cluster fell. Late September and October nights are cooler and bring fewer mosquitoes, though not none.
Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for the Amalfi Coast?
CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Italy, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC has no travel notice for Italy and no vaccine recommendation for a mosquito-borne disease there. Its Italy page lists dengue and leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies, with the advice to avoid bug bites.
