Bratislava and the Danube

Floodplain and house mosquitoes breed along the Danube and the Morava and come out at dusk. Riverside terraces, the Danube banks and outdoor café tables in the evening are where you'll notice them, and they tend to be worse after floods. The old town is lighter. Put repellent on before a riverside dinner or a Danube walk, and keep the windows closed or screened at night. Our guide to how long repellent lasts helps you time the evening top-up.

The day-biting tiger mosquito was first recorded in Slovakia in the Košice basin in the east, in a study published in 2013, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) counts it as established in one of the country's eight regions on its April 2026 map. No locally acquired dengue or chikungunya has been reported in Slovakia.

West Nile in the southwest, ticks on the trails

West Nile virus was first found in mosquitoes in southwestern Slovakia in 2018, and human cases have stayed few and irregular. ECDC counted 1 locally acquired case in 2019, 1 in 2022, 6 in 2024, none in 2025 and 1 in 2026, in the Trnava region, first reported in late October. The 2024 cases were in the Nitra (5) and Trnava (1) regions, both reporting human cases for the first time, and ECDC lists none for the Bratislava region in 2024–2026.

The virus spreads through Culex mosquitoes that bite in the evening and at night, so the riverside routine covers it. Across Europe, cases peaked at the end of August in 2026. There is no vaccine, and travelers 65 and older should take late-summer evenings most seriously.

Hiking in the High Tatras, Slovak Paradise or other forests adds ticks, which spread tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). ECDC counted 158 confirmed TBE cases in Slovakia in 2022, about 2.9 per 100,000 people against 0.81 across the EU/EEA. CDC's Slovakia page says the TBE vaccine "is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary" and "may be considered" for others heading outdoors where ticks are likely. If days of hiking are on your list, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure. On the trail, use a repellent with 20% or more DEET or permethrin-treated clothing, and check for ticks every evening. Our picaridin vs. DEET comparison explains the choice.

Bratislava & the Danube

The High Tatras

Disease risk NegligibleBite nuisance Occasional

No mosquito-borne disease and likely few mosquitoes. Ticks are out on the lower forest paths, so use a DEET repellent and check for ticks each evening.

Slovak Paradise

Disease risk NegligibleBite nuisance Occasional

Forested gorges and ladder trails with tick exposure and no mosquito-borne disease. Treat your hiking clothes with permethrin and do a tick check after the day's walk.

The Slovakia kit

The spray covers Bratislava. Add the permethrin for the Tatras and Slovak Paradise.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless for riverside dinners and evening café tables. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin for hiking pants and socks: treat them at home before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.
  • A plug-in vaporizer for rooms without screens on warm nights with the window open.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor reviews and forum threads and linked so you can read them in full. None is dated, and the tick note comes from the Polish side of the Tatras.

  • Riverbank Restaurant, Bratislava · summer

A reviewer warned that in summer you need mosquito repellent on the riverside terrace, or your dinner by the Danube will be spoiled. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Bratislava · summer

In a thread titled 'Mozzies', one poster said there had been quite a few mosquitoes around Bratislava and advised bringing repellent for evenings at outdoor cafés; another expected fewer, citing the city's relative dryness and occasional cold snaps. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Tatras (Zakopane forum) · April-May

A poster on the Polish side relayed a Polish-Slovak study from the High Tatras and Slovak Karst: ticks were far more common on forest paths than in brush, and conifer-dominated habitats were less favorable to them. TripAdvisor ↗

One more rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip, including in the weeks after a tick bite, means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Slovakia.

Traveler questions

Are there mosquitoes in Bratislava?

Yes, mostly by the river. In summer, the Danube banks and riverside terraces draw mosquitoes at dusk, and they tend to be worse after floods. The old town is lighter. Put repellent on before a riverside dinner or an evening at an outdoor café, and keep the windows closed or screened at night.

Is West Nile a risk in Slovakia?

A small one. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control counted 1 locally acquired case in 2026, in the Trnava region, none in 2025 and 6 in 2024, all in the southwest, and none in the Bratislava region in 2024–2026. The virus spreads through mosquitoes that bite in the evening and at night, so the dusk routine covers it. There is no vaccine, and travelers 65 and older should take late-summer evenings most seriously.

Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for Slovakia?

Slovakia is on WHO's list of malaria-free countries, and CDC recommends no malaria medicine for it. The yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. For tick-borne encephalitis, CDC recommends the vaccine for travelers with extensive tick exposure based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary, and says it may be considered for others doing outdoor activities where ticks are likely. If hiking or camping is on your list, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

Are there mosquitoes in the High Tatras?

Likely few, and no mosquito-borne disease has been reported there. Ticks are the reason to pack repellent for the trails. Use one with 20% or more DEET or permethrin-treated clothing, tuck your pants into your socks on forest paths and check for ticks every evening.
