In Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, the bites start at dusk. Plan your evenings around them.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
House mosquitoes carried West Nile to 111 people across Central Macedonia in 2026, most of them on the farm plains west of the city. The Thessaloniki area counted 19 cases and the Halkidiki peninsulas 2, so from July to September the routine is repellent at dusk and a closed window at night.
Yes, mostly from dusk into the night. Thessaloniki and the Halkidiki peninsulas sit in Central Macedonia, where house mosquitoes spread West Nile to 111 people in 2026, most of them on the farm plains that visitors rarely see. Greece has had no local dengue, chikungunya or Zika, and CDC recommends no malaria medicine, so an evening repellent habit and a closed room cover the visit.
West Nile in Central Macedonia
West Nile virus travels on Culex pipiens, the house mosquito, which bites from dusk through the night. Central Macedonia had Greece's 2010 outbreak, and a study put 81.5% of the country's human cases in 2022 in the region. As of October 21, 2026, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) counted 111 locally acquired cases in the region's seven regional units, out of 457 in Greece: Imathia 39, Pella 27, Thessaloniki 19, Pieria 14, Serres 6, Kilkis 4 and Chalkidiki, which covers Halkidiki, 2.
That was a sharp rise from 2025, when the region had 5 cases and Halkidiki none, and close to 2024, when the Thessaloniki area had 23 and Halkidiki 12. ECDC counts cases by regional unit, so it isn't known whether the 19 Thessaloniki cases were caught in the city or the farmland around it. There is no vaccine, and ECDC reports most cases in men 65 and older, so older travelers should be most careful. Greece's record season centered on Athens, and our Greece briefing covers the rest of the country.
Greece's public health agency has reported occasional locally acquired malaria in rural wetland areas since 2009, including the Delta municipality west of the city, and CDC's Greece page lists no malaria medicine. On yellow fever it says "Vaccine is not recommended" and "Vaccine is not required." CDC also lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn, and has no travel notice for Greece.
Waterfront evenings and Halkidiki nights
House mosquitoes come out just as drinks start on the Thessaloniki waterfront and dinner on the taverna terraces of Ladadika and the Upper Town, and they keep biting through the night in rooms with open windows. The tiger mosquito, which ECDC's April 2026 map shows established in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki, adds daytime bites in gardens and shade. A day of sightseeing tends to bring few bites.
Halkidiki has a reputation as good mosquito country in summer, greener than the dry south of Greece and buggier after rain. Beach-hotel gardens, pools and campsites under the pines on Kassandra and Sithonia are the likely spots, so bring your own repellent and ask for a room with screens that close properly. West of the city, the rice fields and marshes of the Axios delta are the region's big mosquito breeding ground; birders and cyclists should go in the morning, cover up and leave before dusk.
From July to September, put repellent on ankles, arms and neck before evening drinks or dinner, reapply after an evening swim, and sleep with the windows shut and the air conditioning on, or a plug-in vaporizer by the bed. Our repellent timing guide shows how long one coat lasts. June is the easiest month, and late July to mid-September carries the most West Nile risk. Mosquitoes are out from May to October, so a spring or fall trip still calls for the evening spray, with less West Nile.
Where you're going
How the city and the peninsulas compare for a June–September trip.
Thessaloniki: the waterfront, Ladadika & Ano Poli
The Thessaloniki area had 19 West Nile cases in 2026, 1 in 2025 and 23 in 2024. Daytime sightseeing tends to bring few bites. Dusk drinks on the waterfront and dinners on taverna terraces are the exposure, and so is an open window at night.
Kassandra
Halkidiki had 2 probable West Nile cases in 2026, none in 2025 and 12 in 2024. The warm, green peninsula has a reputation as good mosquito country, and repellent at dusk usually handles it; ask for a room with screens.
Sithonia
The same Halkidiki figures apply. Pine-backed beaches and campsites likely mean dusk bites, so put repellent on before dinner and keep the screens closed at night.
The Axios delta
Rice fields and marshes west of the city, the region's big mosquito breeding ground. Go birding or cycling in the morning, wear long sleeves and trousers and leave before dusk.

The Thessaloniki kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless and easy to aim at ankles before dinner. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A plug-in vaporizer for an unscreened room.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full. Only one is dated, to 2006, none describes the 2026 season, and bites vary with the rain, the wind and whether your window has a screen.
- Halkidiki · October · 2006
A reviewer whose October trip was mostly overcast found the area pleasant in sunshine but said wasps swarmed in the sunny spells and the mosquitoes were worse than anywhere else they had been, and could not recommend it. TripAdvisor ↗
- Halkidiki · summer
A longtime poster said northern Greece has more vegetation than the drier south, so there are more mosquitoes in summer, especially after rain; resorts in Halkidiki and Thassos use repellents, but guests are advised to bring their own protection and ask for screened rooms. TripAdvisor ↗
- Afytos (Kassandra)
Asked about mosquitoes in Afytos, a reply said the warm climate and greenery all around make it a good environment for mosquitoes, and that carrying repellent is enough. TripAdvisor ↗
- Thermi dam (Panorama, near Thessaloniki)
A reviewer who liked this countryside spot near Thessaloniki advised avoiding the dam area in the hour before dusk because of mosquitoes. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. A fever with headache, a stiff neck, confusion or a rash during or within two weeks after the trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in northern Greece.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes in Thessaloniki?
Yes, mostly in the evening. House mosquitoes wake at dusk, as drinks start on the waterfront and dinner on the terraces of Ladadika and the Upper Town, and keep biting through the night in rooms with open windows. The tiger mosquito adds daytime bites in gardens and shade, though a day of sightseeing tends to bring few. Put repellent on before going out in the evening, and sleep with the windows shut.
Is West Nile a risk in Thessaloniki or Halkidiki?
In 2026 it was a real one on the farm plains and a smaller one in the city and on the beaches. ECDC counted 111 locally acquired cases in Central Macedonia as of October 21, led by Imathia (39) and Pella (27), with 19 in the Thessaloniki area and 2 probable cases in Halkidiki. Halkidiki had 12 in 2024, so the beaches aren't always quiet. ECDC reports most cases in men 65 and older, and there is no vaccine, so dusk repellent and a closed window from July to September are the protection.
Are Halkidiki's beaches buggy?
Halkidiki has a reputation as warm, green mosquito country, especially after summer rain, and evening repellent usually handles it. Beach-hotel gardens, pool areas and campsites under the pines on Kassandra and Sithonia are the likely spots. Bring your own repellent, reapply after an evening swim and ask for a room with screens that close properly.
Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for northern Greece?
CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Greece, and on yellow fever its Greece page says "Vaccine is not recommended" and "Vaccine is not required." CDC has no travel notice for Greece, and there is no West Nile vaccine. Greece has had no locally acquired dengue, chikungunya or Zika, so evening bite prevention is the plan.
