Siargao is inside the CDC's Mindanao malaria listing. Dengue is the everyday risk.

Siargao belongs to Surigao del Norte, a Mindanao province, so on the CDC's wording it falls in the "Mindanao Island group," where the CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine, though it doesn't name the island. Day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue around General Luna, and mosquitoes in rooms are the recurring complaint.
Yes. Siargao has the day-biting Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue, and mosquitoes in resort rooms are the island's most common bug complaint. Siargao belongs to Surigao del Norte, a Mindanao province, and the CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine for the "Mindanao Island group," so see a travel clinic before the trip. Our Philippines briefing covers the rest of the country.
Malaria: inside the Mindanao listing
The CDC's Philippines page, reviewed in September 2026, says "CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of the Philippines take prescription medicine to prevent malaria." It names the areas as "Province of Palawan and the Mindanao Island group," lists atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine and tafenoquine, and notes that about 85% of cases are Plasmodium falciparum, the more dangerous species. It doesn't name Siargao, but the island is part of Surigao del Norte in Mindanao, so on the CDC's wording it is inside the listing.
See a travel clinic. Book an appointment 4–6 weeks before departure and name Siargao, with your nights there and any other stops in Mindanao or on Palawan. Whether you take medicine, and which one, is the clinician's call. Ask about Japanese encephalitis vaccine too. The CDC recommends it for travelers who "Spend long periods of time, such as a month or more, in areas with Japanese encephalitis," which covers surfers who stay a month or more, and suggests considering it for shorter rural or unscreened stays.
The malaria mosquito bites from dusk to dawn, so put repellent on before sunset and sleep behind screens or under a net. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.
Dengue and the mosquitoes in your room
Dengue is endemic on Siargao. Press reports of regional health data show Surigao del Norte had a heavy 2024, leading the Caraga region with more than 4,000 cases by early November. In late September 2026, Agusan del Sur, elsewhere in the region, declared a province-wide outbreak, local press reported. We couldn't find a 2026 count for Siargao itself. Nationally, the health department reported roughly 40% fewer cases from January to August 2026 than a year earlier, and the Philippines has no CDC travel notice.
Visitors mention mosquitoes in rooms and bathrooms more than the beach niknik that trouble Palawan, so ask your guesthouse for screens, air conditioning or a net. The dengue mosquito peaks after sunrise and before sunset but bites through the day, so put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning, after each surf session or swim, and before sunset. The mangroves around Del Carmen and Sugba Lagoon are mosquito habitat, so apply before the lagoon boat trip.
The CDC's Philippines page also warns of leptospirosis after heavy rain and of counterfeit rabies vaccines, so stay out of floodwater and take any dog bite or scratch to a major hospital.
When to go
Siargao faces the Pacific and has no pronounced dry season. The heaviest rain usually falls roughly November to February, and the drier stretch, roughly March to June, is the easiest for bites. Surf season runs roughly August to November. The CDC's malaria listing names no season, so the clinic visit applies whenever you go.
Where you're going
General Luna & Cloud 9
The surf town and its guesthouses, inside the CDC's Mindanao Island group listing on its face. Mosquitoes in rooms and bathrooms are the common complaint, so ask for screens, air conditioning or a net, and wear repellent by day for dengue.
Sugba Lagoon & the Del Carmen mangroves
A boat trip through mangrove channels to a lagoon on the island's west side. Mangroves breed mosquitoes, so put repellent on before you board and again after a swim.
Naked, Daku & Guyam islands
The island-hopping trio off General Luna: a sandbar, a palm-fringed beach and a small islet, breezy and visited by day. Reapply repellent after each swim.
Magpupungko rock pools
Tidal rock pools on the northeast coast, best at low tide. It's a daytime outing, so a morning coat and a top-up after the swim cover it.
Combining Siargao with El Nido or Coron? The CDC's listing covers all of Palawan too, and the Palawan briefing has the details.
The Siargao kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless, layers over sunscreen and goes back on easily after a surf. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A full-size backup in the checked bag. Reapplying after every session goes through a bottle fast.
- Permethrin 0.5% for evening clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers at home 48 hours before you fly. Fabric only, never skin.

One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were on Siargao, in Mindanao. Dengue usually shows up within two weeks; malaria can take longer, and naming Mindanao gets you the right test quickly.
Traveler questions
Do I need malaria pills for Siargao?
The CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine for the "Province of Palawan and the Mindanao Island group" and lists atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine and tafenoquine. Siargao is part of Surigao del Norte, a Mindanao province, so on the CDC's wording it is inside that listing, though the CDC doesn't name it. See a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure and name Siargao. Whether you take medicine, and which one, is the clinician's call.
Is there dengue on Siargao?
Yes, it's endemic. Surigao del Norte led the Caraga region in 2024 with more than 4,000 cases by early November, and Agusan del Sur, elsewhere in the region, declared a dengue outbreak in late September 2026, according to press reports. Nationally, January to August 2026 ran roughly 40% below 2025. The mosquito bites by day, so reapply repellent after every surf session and swim, and sleep behind screens or under a net.
Should surfers on a long stay ask about the Japanese encephalitis vaccine?
Yes. The CDC recommends it for travelers who "Spend long periods of time, such as a month or more, in areas with Japanese encephalitis," and suggests considering it for shorter stays that include rural areas or nights without air conditioning, screens or bed nets. Bring your dates and where you'll sleep to the travel clinic. The CDC also says chikungunya vaccine may be considered for stays of 6 months or more.
When is the best time to visit Siargao for fewer mosquitoes?
Roughly March to June, the drier stretch on an island with no pronounced dry season. The heaviest rain usually falls from November to February, and surf season runs roughly August to November. Dengue is reported in every month, and the CDC's malaria listing applies year-round, so the clinic visit doesn't depend on your dates.
