Bohol's province-wide outbreak declaration came in late August, with Tagbilaran City, the gateway to Panglao, among the hotspots, and Cebu Province counted 3,268 cases from January to August. The CDC lists no malaria for either island, so the routine is all about the mosquito that bites by day.

Yes, and dengue is the one to plan around. Bohol declared a province-wide dengue outbreak in late August 2026, with Tagbilaran City, the gateway to Panglao, among the hotspots, and Cebu Province's count reached 3,268 cases by the end of August. The CDC lists no malaria for either island.

Travel clinicCDC recommends malaria medicine for the "Province of Palawan and the Mindanao Island group," which leaves out Cebu and Bohol. If the trip continues to El Nido, Coron or Siargao, see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly; ask there about Japanese encephalitis vaccine for rural or unscreened nights in inland Bohol.
When to goEasier: roughly December to May, the drier months. Harder: roughly June to November; in 2026 Cebu opened hospital dengue fast lanes in July and Bohol declared its outbreak in late August. Dengue is reported in every month.

Bohol's outbreak and Cebu's count

Bohol's provincial government declared the outbreak by executive order after three weeks above the epidemic threshold. Philippine news reports put the province at about 2,000 cases and some 20 deaths by early September, with Talibon, Tagbilaran City and Ubay among the hotspots. We found no later update and no count for Panglao itself, so check whether the declaration is still in force before you go.

On Cebu, the province logged 3,268 cases from January to August 2026, according to the Department of Health's Central Visayas office and the provincial health office, as reported in the Philippine press. The most were in Talisay City, Medellin, Toledo City, Consolacion, Minglanilla, Cordova and Dalaguete, and the province opened dengue fast lanes in its hospitals in July. Cordova sits on Mactan Island beside the Lapu-Lapu resort strip. The provincial figure probably doesn't include Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu or Mandaue, and we found no 2026 counts for those cities.

Nationally the year is calmer. The Department of Health counted nearly 118,000 cases from January to August 2026, roughly 40% fewer than a year earlier, and the Philippines has no CDC travel notice.

The Aedes mosquito bites by day, with peaks after sunrise and before sunset. Put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning, reapply after every snorkel and again before sunset, and choose an air-conditioned or screened room. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

Panglao, the hills and the Cebu day trips

Panglao draws the bite complaints, and reviews disagree, from heavy biting at one resort to visitors who saw none. Resort gardens and the vegetated backs of Alona and Dumaluan beaches tend to be the spots at dusk. Inland, the tarsier sanctuaries near Corella, Loboc and Bilar sit in shaded forest, the kind of place day-biting mosquitoes favor.

On Cebu, Oslob's whale-shark watching usually runs early in the morning, and Moalboal's sardine-run and turtle snorkeling happens mostly in the water. Mactan's resorts and Cebu City are urban dengue-mosquito territory. We found no reports of niknik, the beach sand flies that plague Palawan, on Cebu or Bohol.

Malaria and the rest of the CDC list

The CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine only for the "Province of Palawan and the Mindanao Island group," and Cebu and Bohol aren't in either. It says "There is elevated chikungunya risk in the Philippines." Japanese encephalitis vaccine is "Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas," though the CDC suggests considering it for shorter trips with rural or unscreened nights, such as a countryside stay in inland Bohol. The CDC lists Zika for the Philippines, so talk to a healthcare provider if you're pregnant. Away from insects, the same page warns about leptospirosis after flooding and counterfeit rabies vaccines, so avoid floodwater and take any dog or monkey bite to a major hospital.

The hills are open grassland, but the tarsier sanctuaries sit in shaded forest, which suits the day-biting dengue mosquito. Spray arms and legs before the forest walk and wear light long trousers.

Usually an early-morning outing on the beach and in boats, so a coat of repellent at breakfast covers it. Dalaguete, just up the coast, was one of Cebu Province's named 2026 hotspots.

Continuing to El Nido or Coron? The CDC's malaria listing covers all of Palawan, as the Palawan briefing explains. The Boracay briefing covers White Beach, and the Philippines briefing covers Manila and Siargao.

The Cebu & Bohol kit

One spray for snorkel days, a backup for a two-island trip.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and goes back on easily after a snorkel. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A full-size backup in the checked bag, since daytime use for dengue and reapplying after every swim go through a bottle fast.
  • Light long trousers for the tarsier sanctuary and the forest walks inland.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from a Panglao resort review and a Panglao forum thread and linked so you can read them in full. Neither is dated, and they disagree, which is typical for Panglao.

Traveler questions

Is it safe to visit Bohol during the dengue outbreak?

Bohol declared a province-wide outbreak in late August 2026, and Philippine news reports put the province at about 2,000 cases and some 20 deaths by early September. There is no CDC travel notice for the Philippines. The mosquito bites by day, so wear repellent from breakfast on, reapply after swims and before sunset, and sleep in an air-conditioned or screened room. Check local news before you go, since an outbreak declaration can be extended or lifted.

Do I need malaria pills for Cebu or Bohol?

The CDC doesn't list either island. Its Philippines page names two malaria areas, the "Province of Palawan and the Mindanao Island group," and reports "No malaria transmission in metropolitan Manila (the capital) or other urban areas." If the trip continues to El Nido, Coron or Siargao, see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure. Our Palawan briefing has the details.

Are there mosquitoes at the Chocolate Hills and the tarsier sanctuary?

The Chocolate Hills viewpoint is open grassland, while the tarsier sanctuaries sit in shaded forest, which suits the day-biting dengue mosquito. Both are inside Bohol's outbreak declaration. Spray arms and legs before the forest walk, wear light long trousers, and put on a fresh coat if you're there in the late afternoon.

Are Moalboal and Oslob buggy?

We found no bite reports for either, and neither was among Cebu Province's named 2026 dengue hotspots. Oslob's whale-shark watching usually runs early in the morning, so repellent at breakfast covers it. In Moalboal the snorkeling happens in the water, and dusk in garden guesthouses is the likelier bite time, so reapply after swimming and again before sunset.
