The CDC names the town of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands among Indonesia's malaria areas and lists prevention medicine, which makes this a travel-clinic trip. Day boats and midday dragon walks miss most of the malaria mosquito's hours. Evenings in town and on deck don't.

Yes. The CDC names "the town of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands" among Indonesia's malaria areas and lists prevention medicine for them. Dengue is present too, carried by a mosquito that bites by day. How many bites you get depends mostly on where you spend the evenings.

Malaria: the CDC lists medicine here

The CDC's listing covers all of East Nusa Tenggara, the province that takes in Labuan Bajo and Flores.

The CDC's recommendation. Its Indonesia page places malaria transmission in "All areas of eastern Indonesia (the provinces of Maluku, North Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, and West Papua), including the town of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands in the Nusa Tenggara region," and for these areas lists "Atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine, tafenoquine." Book a travel-medicine appointment 4–6 weeks before departure and bring the plan night by night, including any overland Flores. Which medicine, if any, fits your health and route is the clinician's call. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.

Indonesia's own figures point lower. The Ministry of Health's weekly surveillance report counted 1,417 confirmed malaria cases across all of East Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October, with no breakdown by regency, against more than 100,000 each in Papua and Central Papua. Indonesia's state news agency Antara reported in December 2022 that West Manggarai, the regency around Labuan Bajo and Komodo, had received a malaria elimination certificate. The CDC still lists the area, and this page follows the CDC.

Boats, dragons and town

Day boats to Komodo, Rinca and Padar run through the middle of the day, which keeps most of the trip outside the malaria mosquito's hours. Put repellent on over sunscreen before you leave the harbor for the dragon walks, and again after snorkel stops at Pink Beach or Manta Point.

Overnight boats add the evenings. Liveaboards anchored offshore tend to catch a breeze that keeps mosquitoes down, but nights moored close to an island or mangroves can bring them aboard. Malaria mosquitoes bite from dusk to dawn, so treat sunset on deck as the start of their hours, with fresh repellent, long sleeves and trousers, and a closed cabin at night.

In Labuan Bajo, hotel reviews describe mosquitoes in rooms, open bamboo villas included. Choose an air-conditioned room or one with an intact bed net, and keep doors closed after dusk.

Dengue and the rest

The ministry's early-warning system logged 2,686 suspected dengue cases across East Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October, and the CDC says "There is elevated chikungunya risk in Indonesia." Both travel with the day-biting mosquito, which our dengue & Zika routine covers. Ask about Japanese encephalitis vaccine if you're adding rural Flores village stays. Rabies isn't spread by insects, but the CDC's Indonesia page carries an alert that "Increased cases of rabies have been reported in humans in West Timor, Indonesia," which is in the same province, so keep away from dogs.

When to go

Most Komodo and liveaboard trips run in the dry season, roughly April to November, and the rains tend to come roughly December to March. Local officials have said West Manggarai's dengue usually peaks from January to March and again from October to December. The CDC's malaria listing applies in every month.

The CDC names the town itself as a malaria area. Hotel reviews describe mosquitoes in rooms, open bamboo builds included, so pick an air-conditioned room or one with an intact bed net, and cover up at dusk.

Inside the CDC's listing for the Komodo Islands. Day boats run mid-morning to early afternoon, outside the malaria mosquito's hours; on a liveaboard, repellent and long sleeves go on at sunset, especially when you moor close to an island or mangroves.

Komodo & Rinca dragon walks

Disease risk ElevatedBite nuisance Occasional

Guided walks through dry savanna and forest, usually around midday on day trips, so the day-biting dengue mosquito matters more here than the malaria one. Put repellent on before you step off the boat.

The CDC's malaria listing covers all of East Nusa Tenggara, so the highland villages are inside it too. Village homestays are the rural nights where the CDC suggests considering Japanese encephalitis vaccine.

The Komodo kit

The spray covers the boat days. The permethrin and the net cover the malaria hours.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and goes back on easily after a snorkel stop. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for evening clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers at home 48 hours before you fly, for evenings on deck and in town. Fabric only, never skin.
  • A light bed net for an unscreened room in town or an overland homestay.

One more rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in eastern Indonesia. Dengue usually shows up within two weeks; malaria can take longer.

Traveler questions

Do I need malaria pills for a Komodo trip?

The CDC's malaria listing covers all of eastern Indonesia, "including the town of Labuan Bajo and the Komodo Islands," and for these areas it lists atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine or tafenoquine. Its listing makes no exception for day trips. Which medicine, if any, fits your health and route is a call for a travel clinic, made 4–6 weeks before departure, so bring the plan night by night. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.

Are liveaboards better than Labuan Bajo hotels for mosquitoes?

Boats anchored offshore tend to catch a breeze that keeps mosquitoes down, and day trips run through the middle of the day, while hotel reviews in Labuan Bajo describe mosquitoes in rooms. On either, the hours from dusk to dawn are when malaria mosquitoes bite, so put repellent on at sunset, wear long sleeves on deck or at dinner, and sleep in an air-conditioned room or under an intact bed net.

Does Bali's Zika notice cover Komodo?

No. The CDC's Level 2 Zika notice is for Bali. Dengue and chikungunya travel with the same day-biting mosquito across Indonesia, so keep the daytime repellent habit on Flores too. If your trip starts or ends in Bali, the notice applies to that part, and pregnant travelers should read it before booking.

When is the best time to visit Komodo for fewer bites?

Most Komodo and liveaboard trips run in the dry season, roughly April to November, and the rains come roughly December to March. Local officials have said dengue in West Manggarai usually peaks from January to March and again from October to December, so the end of the boat season overlaps one peak. The CDC's malaria listing applies in every month.
