Are there mosquitoes in Puglia? Yes, and 2026 brought the region's first local dengue.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
The tiger mosquito bites by day from Lecce's courtyards to the trullo gardens of the Itria Valley, and in 2026 it spread a 22-case dengue cluster in four towns of the southern Salento. For a visitor the risk stays low, and daytime repellent plus a closed room at night covers it.
Yes. The Asian tiger mosquito bites by day from Lecce's courtyards to the trullo gardens of the Itria Valley, night biters come through unscreened windows, and sand flies come out from dusk to dawn. In 2026 the tiger mosquito spread Puglia's first local dengue outbreak on record, 22 cases in four towns of the southern Salento. For a visitor the risk stays low, and repellent from the morning on plus a closed room at night covers it.
The 2026 Salento dengue cluster
The cluster had onsets from August 20 to October 2 in Alliste, Ugento, Melissano and Taurisano, in the south of Lecce province. Italy's national health institute (ISS) counted 22 confirmed cases in its October 29 update, in data to October 27, with the investigation and mosquito control still under way. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) counted 21 as of October 21 and still listed the cluster as active. It was the second-largest of Italy's 2026 dengue clusters, after the one around Florence, and ECDC's records from 2010 to 2025 list no earlier local dengue in Puglia.
Neither agency splits the cases between the four towns, or between town centers and the coast, so where people were infected isn't known. CDC has no dengue notice for Italy. The tiger mosquito spreads dengue in daylight, with peaks in the morning and late afternoon, so in the southern Salento in late summer repellent goes on over sunscreen in the morning, again after swimming and again in the late afternoon, in town or on the beach. Our daytime-mosquito routine has the schedule.
West Nile, sand flies and the trullo evening
West Nile travels on night-biting Culex mosquitoes. ISS counted 19 locally acquired cases in Puglia in 2026, in data to October 28, 16 of them neuroinvasive. Brindisi province had 6, Lecce 5, Bari and Barletta-Andria-Trani 3 each and Foggia 2. That was up from 13 a week earlier and from 5 in all of 2025, and the count may still rise as cases are notified. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older.
Sand flies are the other night shift. They bite from dusk to dawn and spread leishmaniasis, which CDC lists for Italy, and a survey in Puglia caught the most of them in July and August. At a trullo or masseria, ask whether rooms have screens or air conditioning, keep the windows shut after dark, run a plug-in vaporizer, and put on repellent and light long layers before dinner outside. CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Italy, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. Our Italy briefing covers the rest of the country.
June is easiest; late summer matters most
June is the easiest month. July and August bring the most mosquitoes and the sand fly peak, and the dengue cluster's onsets ran from late August into early October. A late-August or September stay in the Salento is when daytime repellent matters most. The tiger mosquito season starts in May, so a spring trip still calls for repellent on warm afternoons.
Where you're going
How four Puglia bases compare for a June–September trip.
Gallipoli & the Ionian Salento
The 2026 dengue cluster's four towns, Alliste, Ugento, Melissano and Taurisano, are here, with onsets from August 20 to October 2. Neither ISS nor ECDC says whether people were infected in the town centers or on the coast, and Gallipoli wasn't named. Wear daytime repellent anywhere in the area in late summer.
Lecce old town
Lecce city wasn't one of the cluster towns, which lie in the far south of the province, and Lecce province had 5 West Nile cases in 2026. Courtyards and rooftop terraces suit the daytime tiger mosquito, so repellent goes on before the morning walk.
Polignano a Mare & Monopoli
Bari province had 3 West Nile cases in 2026 and no local dengue. Breezy sea-cliff towns tend to bite less, though a terrace dinner still calls for a coat of repellent.
Alberobello, Locorotondo & Ostuni
Trulli and masserie in Bari and Brindisi provinces, and Brindisi had Puglia's most West Nile cases in 2026, 6. Late afternoon in a trullo garden is when bites start, so ask about screens and run a vaporizer at night.

The Puglia kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and deters sand flies as well as mosquitoes. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week for one person.
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus 30%: the plant-based option among EPA-registered repellents. Not for children under 3.
- A plug-in vaporizer for a room with no air conditioning and no screens.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from two TripAdvisor threads and a hotel review, linked so you can read them in full. None is dated, and posters agree that numbers swing with the year's weather and the standing water nearby.
- Trullo near Ceglie Messapica · July/August
A traveler booked into a trullo in Ceglie Messapica asked whether mosquitoes would be a big problem. One reply said it depends on the weather and the year and recommended a store-bought spray, screens and citronella candles in the evening; another, who had stayed near Ceglie, said mosquitoes were an issue from late afternoon, some too small to see, and that DEET was reasonably effective but they all still got bitten. - Trulli del Bosco, Alberobello
A guest whose review warned of scorpions and caterpillars in the room said bugs and mosquitoes were around and advised bringing bug spray. TripAdvisor ↗
- Alberobello, Matera and southern Italy
In a roughly ten-year-old thread about spiders in Alberobello trulli and Matera cave hotels, replies said they had stayed in both without seeing spiders, and one traveler who had spent 46 days in southern Italy and Sicily said a few mosquitoes were the only pests they met. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip, especially with a severe headache, rash or joint pain, means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were bitten in Puglia. Traveler questions
Is there dengue in Puglia?
There was in 2026, for the first time in ECDC's records. A cluster in Alliste, Ugento, Melissano and Taurisano, in the southern Salento, reached 22 confirmed cases by the count of Italy's national health institute (ISS), in data to October 27, with onsets from August 20 to October 2. ECDC counted 21 as of October 21 and still listed it as active. Neither agency says where in those towns people were infected. CDC has no dengue travel notice for Italy. The tiger mosquito that spreads dengue bites in daylight, so daytime repellent is the precaution.
Are there mosquitoes in the trulli?
Usually some, mostly from late afternoon on. Trullo and masseria gardens suit the tiger mosquito, night biters come through unscreened windows, and sand flies bite from dusk to dawn. Ask whether your room has screens or air conditioning, keep the windows shut after dark, run a plug-in vaporizer and put repellent on before dinner outside. Numbers swing with the year's weather and the standing water nearby.
Is West Nile a risk in Puglia?
A small one that grew in 2026. ISS counted 19 locally acquired cases in Puglia as of October 28, up from 5 in all of 2025, with the most in Brindisi province (6), which includes Ostuni, and Lecce (5). Cases are reported by province only. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older. The carriers bite in the evening and at night, so dusk repellent and a closed room cover most of the exposure.
Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for Puglia?
No. CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Italy, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC's Italy page lists dengue and leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies, with the advice to avoid bug bites.
