Are there mosquitoes at Lake Garda? Yes, most of all on the calm southern shore.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
Tiger mosquitoes bite by day in gardens and campsites, and evening biters come out for lakeside walks and waterfront dinners. Verona province had 14 West Nile cases in 2026 and Brescia 17, so a dusk coat of repellent and a closed window at night cover most of what matters.
Yes. The Veneto, Verona's region, has some of Italy's densest tiger mosquitoes, and the lake adds evening biters for waterfront dinners and sunset walks. The calm southern shore has a reputation for the worst of it. West Nile is the virus to know about here, and a dusk coat of repellent and a closed window at night cover most of the risk.
The calm south and the breezy north
Lake Garda's shores fall in three provinces. Verona's takes in the east shore, from Peschiera and Lazise to Bardolino, Garda and Malcesine. Brescia's covers Sirmione, Desenzano and the west side, and the Autonomous Province of Trento holds the northern tip at Riva and Torbole. ECDC, Europe's disease agency, ranks the Veneto among Italy's densest tiger mosquito areas. Expect daytime bites in hotel gardens, campsites, lakeside parks and Verona's courtyards, with peaks in the morning and late afternoon.
Evenings belong to Culex, the night biter that carries West Nile. Lakeside walks, waterfront dinners and the walk back from a swim are the usual times to get bitten, and the calmer southern end around Sirmione, Desenzano and Peschiera has a reputation for more mosquitoes than the breezier north. Put repellent on before you go out, reapply after you've been in the water, and wear light trousers at dusk. Window screens are uncommon in Italian hotels, so book air conditioning or run a plug-in vaporizer and keep the windows shut at night. Our repellent timing guide shows how long one coat lasts.
West Nile, and the 2025 chikungunya outbreak
Italy is Europe's most affected country for West Nile, with 770 locally acquired cases in 2026 as of October 21. Italy's national health institute (ISS) counted 14 of them in Verona province, 17 in Brescia province and 1 in Trento, the first ever recorded there, plus 20 in Mantova, just south of the lake. Verona and Brescia's counts were similar to 2025's and far below Roma province's 72. Cases are reported by province only, so none can be placed on the lake shore. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older.
Chikungunya and dengue travel on the tiger mosquito. In 2025 a chikungunya outbreak of 61 cases centered on Parona near Verona spread through Verona city, Bardolino on the lake and the Valpolicella wine towns, according to ECDC. It did not return in 2026, when Italy's only local case was in Rome. Verona, Brescia and Trento provinces had no local dengue in 2025 or 2026, and the Veneto's 2026 cluster, 8 cases, was in Cartigliano, in Vicenza province.
Italy's 2026 West Nile onsets ran from late May to the end of September and peaked at the end of August, so late August and September are when the evening routine matters most. Tiger mosquitoes peak in late July, and spring and October trips bring fewer bites.
CDC has no travel notice for Italy, lists no malaria medicine and says the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. Its tick-borne encephalitis advice concerns hikers and is in the FAQ below, and it lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn.
Where you're going
How the shores and Verona compare for a June–September trip.
Verona's old town
Verona city was part of the 2025 chikungunya outbreak, with none in 2026. Tiger mosquitoes bite by day in courtyards and gardens, and an evening out falls in the night biters' hours, so repellent goes on before dinner.
Sirmione, Desenzano & Peschiera
The calm southern end has a reputation as the buggiest part of the lake from June on. Sirmione and Desenzano are in Brescia province and Peschiera in Verona's, and their 2026 West Nile counts aren't broken down by town. Repellent before every lakeside evening.
Bardolino, Lazise, Garda & Malcesine
Bardolino was one of the towns in the 2025 chikungunya outbreak, which didn't return in 2026, and Verona province's West Nile figures apply here. Reapply after a swim and before a waterfront dinner.
Riva del Garda, Torbole & Arco
The windier north tends to be the mildest part of the lake, though repellent still helps on lakeside walks. Trento province had its first-ever West Nile case in 2026. Mountain hikers should read CDC's tick advice.
The Italy briefing covers Rome, Florence and the south, and our Venice briefing covers the lagoon if your trip continues east.
The Lake Garda kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless and quick to reapply after a swim. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A plug-in vaporizer for an unscreened room without air conditioning.
- Permethrin 0.5% for hiking clothes: treat trousers and socks at home 48 hours before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from two TripAdvisor threads and linked so you can read them in full. Neither is dated, and both are about the lake shore rather than Verona.
- Sirmione and the southern end of Lake Garda · June
A longtime contributor said mosquitoes are usually worse at the southern end of the lake than in the breezier north, and another poster said they had been out everywhere in and around the southern end in June. A reply suggested Autan repellent and noted it needs reapplying after you have been in the water. TripAdvisor ↗
- Riva del Garda, Bardolino and Malcesine
Asked whether repellent was needed for a stay in Riva, a reply said it is always wise for people mosquitoes like, especially for lakeside walks; another poster said bugs are a problem everywhere in the area, and a third said mosquito bites in Bardolino and Malcesine were bad enough to need an antibiotic cream from a pharmacy and can leave scars. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. A fever with headache, rash or joint pain during or within two weeks after the trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were bitten by mosquitoes around Lake Garda, where West Nile circulated in 2026.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes at Lake Garda?
Yes. Tiger mosquitoes bite by day in gardens, campsites and lakeside parks, and night-biting Culex comes out for evening walks and waterfront dinners. The calm southern shore around Sirmione, Desenzano and Peschiera has a reputation for the worst of it, and the breezier north around Riva and Torbole tends to be milder. Put repellent on before going out in the evening and again after a swim.
Is West Nile a risk at Lake Garda?
A small one. Italy's national health institute (ISS) counted 14 locally acquired cases in Verona province, 17 in Brescia province and 1 in Trento, its first ever, in 2026 as of October 21, out of 770 nationwide. Cases are reported by province only, so none can be placed on the lake shore. Verona and Brescia had similar counts in 2025. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older. The mosquitoes that carry it bite in the evening and at night, so dusk repellent and a closed bedroom cover most of the exposure.
Is there chikungunya around Verona?
Not in 2026. In 2025 an outbreak of 61 cases centered on Parona near Verona spread through Verona city, Bardolino on the lake and the Valpolicella wine towns, according to ECDC, with onsets from late July to mid-October. Italy's only local case in 2026 was in Rome. The tiger mosquito that spreads it is still common here, so the daytime repellent habit stays.
Do I need any vaccines for Lake Garda?
Not for mosquitoes. CDC recommends no malaria medicine for Italy, and the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. CDC does recommend the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for travelers with extensive tick exposure in the parts of Italy where the disease occurs, without naming them. If long hikes in the mountains above Riva are on your plan, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure whether it applies to your route.
