Are there mosquitoes in Los Cabos? After the rain, yes.
Los Cabos is desert, so mosquitoes follow the late-summer and fall rains, and so does dengue. The 2026 season is running well ahead of 2025's and usually peaks from October to December. January to April is the calm stretch.
Yes, mostly after rain. Los Cabos is a desert coast, so mosquitoes are scarce in dry spells and hatch in numbers once rain leaves standing water, and dengue follows the same late-summer and fall rains. The 2026 season is running well ahead of 2025's and usually peaks from October to December, so an early-December trip overlaps its tail, while January to April is usually calm.
Dengue: a fall season that reaches into December
Mexico's health ministry counted 403 confirmed dengue cases and 1 death in Baja California Sur through mid-October 2026, against 214 at the same point in 2025. Los Cabos municipality had 170 of them, already far above its 66 for all of 2025. The count will keep rising. In 2023 and 2025, most of the state's confirmed cases came after mid-October, and in 2024 close to half did.
The big Los Cabos years were 2023, with 605 confirmed cases in the municipality, and 2024, the state's record, with 2,618 confirmed statewide and 2,258 of them in Los Cabos. In 2025 the season centered on La Paz instead. Winter is the quiet end. Counting from January 1, the state had 36 confirmed cases by February 9, 2026, and 109 by April 27.
The dengue mosquito, Aedes, bites in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon, and tends to breed in containers and watered landscaping around town and the resorts. For a December trip, put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning as well as at dusk, especially after recent rain or a late-season storm. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.
The rest of the list is short. Mexico's weekly bulletin reported no chikungunya, Zika, West Nile or malaria in Baja California Sur through early October 2026. The CDC's malaria areas for Mexico are "Campeche, Chiapas, and the southern part of Chihuahua state," plus rare cases in Oaxaca, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tabasco, so Baja California Sur isn't among them. The CDC does not recommend the yellow fever vaccine for Mexico, Mexico isn't on its global dengue list, and its tick notice names Baja California, not Baja California Sur.
San José bites more than Cabo San Lucas
Bites in Los Cabos come and go with the rain. Visitors describe few mosquitoes in dry spells and a surge after rainfall, December included. San José del Cabo has a reputation for more mosquitoes than Cabo San Lucas, with the estuary the usual suspect, so estuary walks and evenings in San José are the main exposure. Irrigated resort gardens are the other likely spot, since they hold water in a desert. Keep balcony doors closed or screened after dark.
Expect the occasional no-see-um at dawn and dusk too. Our Barbados sand fly guide explains how these tiny midges behave.
Where you're staying
The scores below are for a December–April trip that may start inside the fall season. From January to April, disease risk drops a step, to Low.
Cabo San Lucas: marina, Médano Beach & downtown
Visitors tend to find it less buggy than San José, but the dengue mosquito is active in town after rain. Daytime repellent covers the marina, the beach and downtown.
San José del Cabo: estuary & Art District
The buggiest part of Los Cabos by reputation, with the estuary the likely source. Wear repellent for estuary walks and evenings in the Art District, and keep balcony doors closed.
Tourist Corridor resorts
Irrigated, landscaped grounds are where mosquitoes are most likely to find water in a desert. Use repellent on garden paths and by the pool after rain.
Todos Santos
Part of La Paz municipality, which led the state's 2025 season and had 113 confirmed cases through mid-October 2026. There are no separate figures for the town, so bring the same daytime routine.

The Los Cabos kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and deters no-see-ums as well as mosquitoes. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus 30%: the plant-based option among EPA-registered repellents. Not for children under 3.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor forum threads and linked so you can read them in full. None is dated, and in a desert the most recent rain matters more than the year.

One rule outlasts the trip. A fever during the trip or within two weeks of returning means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in Los Cabos. If you were bitten during a fall trip, bitten in a dengue zone covers the symptoms to watch and when to get tested.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes in Los Cabos in December?
Sometimes, and it depends on the rain. Mosquitoes are scarce in dry spells and hatch after rainfall, and Baja California Sur's dengue season usually peaks from October to December. An early-December trip, especially after a wet fall or a late storm, can overlap the tail of it, so wear repellent in the daytime as well as at dusk. January to April is the low point.
Do I need malaria pills or vaccines for Los Cabos?
The CDC does not recommend malaria prevention medicine for Los Cabos. Its Mexico recommendation covers Campeche, Chiapas and southern Chihuahua, and Baja California Sur is not among its malaria areas. The CDC says the yellow fever vaccine is not recommended for Mexico, and the chikungunya vaccine may be considered only for stays of about six months or more. Mexico's bulletin reported no chikungunya in the state in 2026.
Is San José del Cabo worse for mosquitoes than Cabo San Lucas?
It has that reputation. Visitors tend to report more mosquitoes in San José and point to the estuary as the source, so estuary walks and evenings in the Art District are when repellent matters most. Cabo San Lucas and the Tourist Corridor tend to be lighter, though irrigated resort gardens can hold mosquitoes after rain.
When is the best time to visit Los Cabos for fewer mosquitoes?
January to April, the dry season and the low point for dengue. Counting from January 1, the state had 36 confirmed cases by February 9, 2026 and 109 by April 27, against 403 by mid-October. The daytime dengue mosquito doesn't disappear in winter, so carry repellent and use it after any rain.
