A Gili-only stay is outside the CDC's malaria listing, while a Rinjani trek or village nights in rural Lombok are inside it, and the CDC doesn't say where Senggigi and Kuta Lombok fall. Dengue runs across both, with 6,289 suspected cases in West Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October.

Yes, and the two halves of a typical trip get different malaria advice. The CDC reports no malaria transmission on the Gili Islands, while rural Lombok, which takes in a Mount Rinjani trek, is on its list for prevention medicine. Dengue is present on both, carried by a mosquito that bites by day.

Two trips, two malaria answers

The CDC's Indonesia page lists "Rural areas of Kalimantan (Borneo), West Nusa Tenggara (includes the island of Lombok), Sulawesi, and Sumatra" for malaria prevention medicine, and reports "No malaria transmission in the resort areas of Bali or Java, the Gili Islands, or the Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu)."

Off the malaria list

Gili Trawangan · Gili Air · Gili Meno

Dengue is the risk to plan around.

  • Repellent over sunscreen every morning
  • A fresh coat before a night out
  • An air-conditioned room or one with a net
On the malaria list

Rinjani · Senaru · Sembalun · village stays

Rural Lombok is inside the CDC's listing for West Nusa Tenggara.

  • Travel clinic 4–6 weeks out
  • Permethrin-treated trekking clothes
  • Repellent and long sleeves from sunset
  • Ask about Japanese encephalitis vaccine

The beach strips sit in between. The CDC doesn't say whether Senggigi and Kuta Lombok count as rural, so ask the clinic with your hotel's name. Local numbers are low but real. Indonesia's Ministry of Health early-warning system logged 66 confirmed malaria cases across West Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October, and after the 2018 earthquake a ministry blood survey in Gunung Sari, inland in West Lombok, turned up more than 40 cases.

Dengue and the daytime routine

The same system logged 6,289 suspected dengue cases in West Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October, the 13th-highest count among Indonesia's provinces. The CDC says "There is elevated chikungunya risk in Indonesia," though the province logged only 3 suspected chikungunya cases this year. Both viruses travel with the day-biting Aedes mosquito, so repellent goes on over sunscreen in the morning, after swims and before sunset. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

Where the bites are

On the Gilis, mosquitoes pick up in the rainy season and multiply quickly after heavy rain, and guesthouse gardens are the likely spots at dusk. Ask whether your room has a net or air-conditioning. Gili Trawangan's bars tend to keep people out late, long after the morning's repellent has worn off, so put on a fresh coat before you go.

On Rinjani, the villages and forested lower trails around Senaru and Sembalun are the rural nights the CDC's listing covers, so cover up at dusk in the guesthouses. The cold upper camps tend to have few mosquitoes. A rural trek is also where the CDC suggests considering Japanese encephalitis vaccine, so raise it at the same clinic visit. Keep away from dogs too, since the CDC says "Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Indonesia."

When to go

Lombok's dry season runs roughly May to October, and the rains roughly November to March or April, the buggier stretch on the Gilis. Rinjani's trails tend to close for part of the wet season, roughly January to March. The CDC's malaria listing for rural Lombok names no season.

Where you're going

island

Gili Trawangan

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

The busiest of the three Gilis, where the CDC reports no malaria transmission and the Bali Zika notice doesn't apply. Dengue is present, so keep the daytime habit, and reapply before a night out at the bars.

resort

Senggigi & West Lombok

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

The CDC lists rural West Nusa Tenggara for malaria medicine without saying whether resort strips count, so bring your hotel's name to the clinic. The day-biting dengue mosquito is the everyday risk.

beach

Kuta Lombok & Mandalika

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

Central Lombok's surf and resort coast, in the same gray zone as Senggigi on the CDC's rural wording. Daytime repellent for dengue, and a clinic question if you're adding village stays.

highland

Mount Rinjani trek

Disease risk ElevatedBite nuisance Occasional

Multi-day treks through rural Lombok, inside the CDC's malaria listing. Dusk at the village guesthouses and on the forested lower trails is when to cover up; the cold upper camps tend to have few mosquitoes.

The Lombok kit

The spray covers a Gili week. Add the permethrin for Rinjani.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and goes back on easily after a snorkel or dive. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for trekking clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and socks at home 48 hours before you fly, for Rinjani's villages and lower trails. Fabric only, never skin.
  • A light long-sleeved layer for village evenings and the cold upper camps.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor forum threads and a resort review and linked so you can read them in full. Only one carries a year (2020), so read them for where and when bites happen and use the figures above for this year.

  • Kuta Lombok & the south coast · 2020

Asked about malaria around Kuta and the south coast, a reply said the malaria risk in south Lombok is considered very slim and that dengue is the greater risk in Indonesia today. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Gili Trawangan · rainy season (about Nov-Apr)

A reply said the rainy season, roughly November to April, is traditionally the worse time for mosquitoes, though not in huge clouds, and recommended DEET plus coils or sprays from the island's mini-markets. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Manta Dive Gili Trawangan Resort · after heavy rain

A guest's review complained about mosquitoes. The resort's manager replied that mosquitoes multiply very fast after heavy rain and that rooms have plug-in vaporizers and air conditioning but no mosquito nets. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Senggigi

A reply said the mosquito that spreads dengue and chikungunya was present in the Senggigi area and that malaria cases there had been few in recent years. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Gili Air

A traveler asked about bites that did not look like mosquito bites, saying they had not seen or heard many mosquitoes; the thread did not confirm what caused them. TripAdvisor ↗

One more rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were on Lombok, and whether you trekked or stayed on the Gilis. Dengue usually shows up within two weeks; malaria can take longer.

Traveler questions

Do I need malaria pills for the Gili Islands?

The CDC reports "No malaria transmission in the resort areas of Bali or Java, the Gili Islands, or the Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu)," so it recommends no prevention medicine for a Gili-only stay. Dengue is present, so keep the daytime repellent habit. If the trip adds a Rinjani trek or nights in rural Lombok, that part is on the CDC's malaria list.

Do I need malaria medicine for a Rinjani trek?

The CDC lists rural areas of West Nusa Tenggara, which includes Lombok, for malaria prevention medicine, and a trek through the villages and forest around Senaru or Sembalun is rural Lombok. It names atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine or tafenoquine. Which medicine, if any, fits your health and route is a call for a travel clinic, made 4–6 weeks before departure, since the medicine starts before the trip. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.

Is there malaria in Senggigi or Kuta Lombok?

The CDC doesn't say whether Lombok's resort strips count as rural. Local figures are low but not zero. Indonesia's Ministry of Health counted 66 confirmed malaria cases across all of West Nusa Tenggara in 2026 through late October. Bring your hotel's name to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure and ask whether the CDC's wording applies.

Does Bali's Zika notice cover Lombok and the Gilis?

No. The CDC's Level 2 Zika notice is for Bali. If your trip includes Bali, the notice applies to that part, and pregnant travelers should follow it and talk to a healthcare provider about the whole route. Dengue and chikungunya travel with the same day-biting mosquito across Indonesia, so the daytime routine stays the same.
