Fiji's health ministry counted 5,124 of the country's 11,599 dengue cases from January 1 to July 27, 2025 in the Western Division, home to Nadi and Denarau. WHO surveillance puts 2026 at or below the usual level, and there is no malaria. The routine is daytime repellent, plus covered ankles at dusk near the mangroves and on island beaches.

Yes. Nadi and Denarau have mosquitoes all year, including the day-biting kind that spreads dengue, and their Western Division led Fiji's 2025 outbreak. 2026 has been a normal year, and there is no malaria. Our Fiji briefing covers Suva, the Coral Coast and the rest of the country.

The Western Division's dengue years

The Western Division has had two recent outbreaks. On April 26, 2024, Fiji's Ministry of Health and Medical Services declared a dengue outbreak in the Western Division, with 370 cases since January and a surge "particularly in Nadi, Ba and Tavua." It declared that one over on July 23, 2024. In early February 2025 it declared another. By February 20, the West had 757 of Fiji's 1,277 cases, and response work later reached all six Western subdivisions. Cases were falling by April 11, and on August 12, 2025 the ministry declared the outbreak over, counting 5,124 of Fiji's 11,599 cases from January 1 to July 27 in the Western Division.

2026 has been quiet. WHO's Western Pacific dengue update of October 15, 2026 shows Fiji's weekly reports of dengue-like illness peaking at roughly 300 in March and early April, close to the five-year median, and under 100 from mid-September. Fiji isn't on the CDC's global dengue list. The CDC also lists Zika, with no current outbreak, so if you're pregnant, talk to a healthcare provider before the trip.

Denarau, the town and the islands

The dengue mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the one that matters here. The ministry describes it as a black-and-white striped mosquito that lives in towns, in and around houses and in water-holding containers, and it schedules fogging for early morning and late afternoon, "the time when the outdoor dengue mosquito vector is most active." Put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning, again after the pool or a boat day and before sunset drinks. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

Denarau is the tidiest end of it. The company that manages the estate fogs it every two weeks, and its grounds leave few places to breed. Researchers think that may be why Wolbachia mosquitoes, released across Nadi in 2019 to cut dengue, never took hold on Denarau, though they did in five of six Nadi areas, according to a 2024 study in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Mosquitoes still turn up there at dawn and in the evening. Nadi town and the Wailoaloa hotel strip near the airport are ordinary neighborhoods, where yards and containers tend to give mosquitoes more room.

The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, reached by boat from Port Denarau, are smaller and flatter, and travelers often find them less buggy. Resorts there commonly screen their bures, so keep the door shut. What Fiji travelers call sand flies on island beaches and around Denarau's mangroves are likely biting midges, the no-see-ums our Barbados sand fly guide explains. They go for feet and ankles at dawn and dusk, more in the rainy months.

Timing by season

The ministry says more dengue is expected every year in the rainy season, from October to April, with big rises after heavy rain and flooding. Roughly May to October, the drier season, tends to be the easier half of the year. In the rains, avoid wading through floodwater or muddy fresh water, which can spread leptospirosis; the ministry counted 252 cases in the Western Division from January 1 to March 23, 2025.

One spray covers a resort week. Add the backup for island-hopping or a family.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and easy to aim at ankles before an early boat. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A full-size backup in the checked bag, so you're not paying island resort-shop prices.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full. Only one is dated, from 2013, and the threads are old, so use the health ministry and WHO figures above for this year.

  • Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Denarau Island · 2013

A repeat guest titled the review a mosquito warning: they kept getting bitten even while sleeping in long sleeves and socks, though staff sprayed the room daily when asked. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Navini and Matamanoa (Mamanuca Islands)

A Navini poster said bures are screened, so keeping the door closed keeps the room mosquito-free; sand flies were mentioned as a problem around the tennis court on Matamanoa. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Plantation Island Resort (Malolo Lailai) · summer (wet season)

A reviewer noted that sand flies and mosquitoes are more common in the summer months because of higher rainfall. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Denarau Island · several times of year

A poster who had stayed on Denarau at different times of year said there were always mosquitoes, especially early in the morning and in the evening, and advised applying repellent regularly and burning citronella coils on the deck. They had not noticed sand flies or midges as much but expected some at dusk and early morning because of the mangroves around the area. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Fiji resorts (thread mentions Denarau)

In a Fiji forum thread on bugs, one poster said most resorts now spray, which seemed to take care of mosquitoes, midges and sand flies; another said they took a daily oral antihistamine to cope with bites. TripAdvisor ↗

One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Fiji, especially if it comes with headache, rash or body aches.

Traveler questions

Is there dengue in Nadi right now?

At normal levels. Dengue is endemic in Fiji. The health ministry declared the 2025 Western Division outbreak over on August 12, 2025, and WHO's Western Pacific update of October 15, 2026 shows Fiji's weekly reports of dengue-like illness at or below the five-year median for most of 2026. The mosquito bites by day, so the morning and late-afternoon repellent habit stays.

Did the Wolbachia mosquitoes work in Nadi?

They took hold, but whether they cut dengue hasn't been reported yet. The World Mosquito Program released Wolbachia-carrying dengue mosquitoes in six zones of Nadi from May to November 2019. By January 2022, more than 80% of trapped mosquitoes carried Wolbachia in five of six Nadi areas, but it never established on Denarau, according to a 2024 study in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. The Western Division still had Fiji's most cases in 2025, so plan your routine as if the mosquitoes were ordinary ones.

Are the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands less buggy than Denarau?

Often, yes. Travelers tend to find the smaller, flatter islands lighter on mosquitoes, and resorts there commonly spray and screen their bures, so keep the door shut. Some island beaches and resort grounds have sand flies at dawn and dusk, more in the rainy months, so spray your feet and ankles. Dengue occurs countrywide, so the daytime habit applies on the islands too.

Do I need malaria pills or vaccines for Nadi?

No. The CDC lists no malaria for Fiji and says yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required when you fly from the US. Fiji does require it from travelers aged 1 and older arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, including layovers of more than 12 hours there. The CDC lists Zika for Fiji, with no current outbreak, so if you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk to a healthcare provider before the trip.
