Fiji's dengue is back to normal after a heavy 2025.

WHO surveillance puts 2026 at or below the usual level, far below last year's outbreak in the Western Division, home to Nadi and Denarau. There is no malaria. Dengue is endemic, though, so a daytime repellent habit stays on the list, more so from January to April.

Fiji has mosquitoes all year, and dengue is endemic. The mosquito that spreads it bites in the daytime as well as at dusk, so repellent goes on in the morning, before the pool or the boat. After a large outbreak in 2025, 2026 has been a normal year, and there is no malaria.

Dengue after the 2025 outbreak

Fiji has had big dengue years recently. The World Health Organization counted 8,418 cases in 2022 and 11,522 in 2023. Early in 2025 the health ministry declared an outbreak in the Western Division, home to Nadi and Denarau. The surge ran from about February to May, and the Fiji Sun reported more than 10,000 cases by mid-June.

2026 looks very different. WHO's Western Pacific dengue update of October 15, 2026 shows Fiji's weekly reports of dengue-like illness at or below the five-year median for most of the year, far below the 2025 peak. Fiji has no CDC travel notice and isn't on the CDC's global dengue list.

Dengue is still endemic, so the routine stays. Aedes mosquitoes bite in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon. Put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning, reapply after swimming and again before sunset. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule. The CDC also lists Zika for Fiji, with no current outbreak, so if you're pregnant, talk to a healthcare provider before the trip.

Denarau, the outer islands and Suva

Where you stay changes the bite count more than the disease picture. Denarau's resorts spray, but mosquitoes rise after rain across the main island of Viti Levu, from Nadi to the Coral Coast. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands are smaller and drier, and travelers often find them less buggy. Resorts across the country commonly spray and screen their bures, so keep the door shut.

Suva and the Coral Coast sit on the side of Viti Levu that tends to get more rain, and travelers report sand flies on Coral Coast beaches. Those tiny biters go for ankles at dawn and dusk; our sand fly guide explains their schedule. Dengue is countrywide, so the daytime habit applies on every island.

Timing by season

May to October, the drier season, tends to be the easier half of the year, and travelers report fewer mosquitoes then, mostly at dusk. January to April, the wet season, brings the most mosquitoes and the usual dengue peak, and travelers say the bugs pick up from around December. In any month, bites pick up after a heavy shower leaves standing water behind.

One note unrelated to mosquitoes: leptospirosis was reported alongside dengue in Fiji in 2025. Avoid wading in floodwater or muddy fresh water after heavy rain.

Where you're staying

Here is how the main areas compare across the year.

resort

Nadi & Denarau

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

In the Western Division, where the 2025 outbreak was declared; 2026 is back to normal. Resorts spray, but mosquitoes rise after rain, so the daytime routine applies at the pool too.

Mamanuca & Yasawa islands

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Occasional

Drier, smaller islands that travelers often find less buggy, with screened bures. Dengue is countrywide, so keep the daytime repellent on anyway.

resort

Suva & the Coral Coast

On the side of Viti Levu that tends to be wetter, and travelers report sand flies on Coral Coast beaches. Cover ankles at dawn and dusk.

The Fiji kit

Small and simple. Add the backup for a family or more than a week of island-hopping.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and lasts a long boat day. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A full-size backup in the checked bag, so you're not buying an unknown brand at an island resort shop.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and reviews and linked so you can read them in full. Only one is dated, and trips vary with rain, wind and which island you're on.

  • Fiji (general) · May · 2025

In a May 2025 thread asking for recent dengue experiences, posters stressed that the dengue mosquito bites during the day, not only at dusk. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Navini and Matamanoa (Mamanuca Islands)

A Navini poster said bures are screened, so keeping the door closed keeps the room mosquito-free; sand flies were mentioned as a problem around the tennis court on Matamanoa. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Plantation Island Resort (Malolo Lailai) · summer (wet season)

A reviewer noted that sand flies and mosquitoes are more common in the summer months because of higher rainfall. TripAdvisor ↗

One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Fiji, especially if it comes with headache, rash or body aches.

Traveler questions

Is there dengue in Fiji right now?

Yes, at normal levels. Dengue is endemic in Fiji, and WHO's Western Pacific update of October 15, 2026 shows weekly reports of dengue-like illness at or below the five-year median for most of 2026, far below the 2025 outbreak. Daytime repellent is still the routine.

Are the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands less buggy than Denarau?

Often, yes. Travelers tend to find the smaller, drier islands lighter on mosquitoes, and resorts commonly spray and screen their bures. Dengue occurs countrywide, so the daytime habit still applies, and some beaches have sand flies at dawn and dusk.

Do I need malaria pills or a yellow fever vaccine for Fiji?

No. The CDC lists no malaria for Fiji and doesn't recommend the yellow fever vaccine, and you don't need proof of vaccination flying from the US. Fiji does require it from travelers aged 1 and older arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, including airport transits or layovers of more than 12 hours there.

Is it safe to visit Fiji while pregnant?

The CDC lists Zika for Fiji, as an area with current or past transmission and no current outbreak. Zika can pass from a pregnant woman to her baby, so talk to a healthcare provider before you book.
