The tiger mosquito spread dozens of local chikungunya cases through the suburbs of Montpellier and Nîmes in 2025, and salt-marsh mosquitoes rise from the coastal lagoons in the evening. 2026 was much quieter, CDC has no travel notice for mainland France, and repellent in the morning and late afternoon covers most of it.

Yes, in two shifts. The tiger mosquito bites by day in the gardens, café terraces and pool areas of Montpellier and Nîmes, and salt-marsh mosquitoes rise from the coastal lagoons at dusk. The area had a busy chikungunya summer in 2025 and a quiet 2026, and CDC has no travel notice for mainland France and recommends no malaria medicine, so repellent by day and a closed room at night cover it.

Disease risk ModerateSanté publique France counted 85 local chikungunya cases in the Hérault and the Gard in 2025, mostly around Montpellier and Nîmes; 2026 brought 2 local dengue cases in Sète and West Nile in the Gard (8) and the Hérault (3).

Chikungunya, dengue and West Nile

Chikungunya and dengue travel on the tiger mosquito, which the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) maps as established along the whole Languedoc coast. In 2025 it spread chikungunya through the suburbs. Santé publique France, the national public health agency, counted 43 local cases in the Hérault in its final 2025 report, all around Montpellier and its hinterland, including 17 in Castries and 12 in Mauguio. In the Gard it counted 42, mostly around Nîmes, including 10 in Nîmes itself; ECDC, which groups some clusters differently, lists 36. Our France briefing covers the Riviera and Bordeaux outbreaks.

2026 was much quieter. The Hérault and the Aude had no local chikungunya, and the Gard's only cluster was in Aigues-Mortes, which our Camargue briefing covers. Sète had 2 local dengue cases in July 2026, the only ones in the Hérault, Gard and Aude that year.

West Nile rides on Culex mosquitoes, which bite in the evening and at night and come in through open windows. Santé publique France counted 8 local cases in the Gard and 3 in the Hérault as of October 26, 2026, and the Aude had its first human cases ever. Severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older, ECDC notes, so older travelers should be most careful from July to September.

CDC's France page lists no malaria medicine and says of yellow fever, "Vaccine is not recommended" and "Vaccine is not required." It also lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn.

Gardens by day, lagoons at dusk

By day the tiger mosquito works the gardens of Montpellier and Nîmes, café terraces, shady old-town lanes and hotel pools. Put repellent on over sunscreen at breakfast and again in the late afternoon; our daytime-mosquito routine has the schedule.

Along the shore, salt-marsh mosquitoes breed in the lagoons, from the Étang de l'Or and the Palavas lagoons to the Thau lagoon at Sète and around Narbonne. EID Méditerranée, a public mosquito-control agency, treats their breeding sites, and the beach resorts tend to be much milder than the untreated marshes of the Camargue. Lagoon mosquitoes still come in waves after rain and high water, still and humid evenings are the worst, and a strong mistral or tramontane tends to keep them down.

The likeliest bites come at dusk on lagoon-side terraces in Palavas, Carnon and Sète, on evening walks along the Canal du Midi and at the Gardon river beaches below the Pont du Gard. Reapply before dinner by the water, wear light long sleeves and trousers near the étangs at dusk, and sleep with air conditioning or screens, or a plug-in vaporizer.

June is the easiest summer month, and most local cases have come from late July to mid-September. Santé publique France watches for local cases from May through November, so a spring or fall trip still calls for daytime repellent.

Where you're staying

How the main stops compare for a June–September trip.

city

Montpellier, Palavas & the Étang de l'Or

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

Montpellier itself had no 2025 cluster, but its suburbs and lagoon villages did, led by Castries with 17 cases and Mauguio with 12. Expect daytime tiger mosquitoes in town and dusk bites on lagoon-side terraces in Palavas and Carnon.

city

Nîmes & the Pont du Gard

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

Nîmes had 10 local chikungunya cases in August and September 2025, with more in Caveirac and Poulx on its edge, and none in 2026. Wear repellent by day in the city's gardens and before an evening swim at the Gardon river beaches below the Pont du Gard.

beach

Sète & the Thau lagoon

Disease risk LowBite nuisance Noticeable

A 2-case dengue cluster in July 2026 was the only local dengue in the Hérault, Gard and Aude that year. The oyster lagoon is salt-marsh mosquito country, so reapply before dinner by the water.

city

Carcassonne, Narbonne & the Canal du Midi

Disease risk LowBite nuisance Noticeable

The Aude had no local dengue or chikungunya in 2024–2026, and its first human West Nile cases ever in 2026. The walled Cité is a daytime visit; canal-side evenings and Narbonne's lagoons are when to cover up.

Driving east? The Camargue briefing covers the delta's marshes, and the Provence briefing covers Avignon and Marseille.

The Languedoc kit

Small. The spray covers the days, and the vaporizer covers the nights.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat and layers over sunscreen. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week for one person.
  • A plug-in vaporizer for an unscreened room without air conditioning.
  • Light long sleeves and trousers for dusk by the étangs and along the Canal du Midi.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads, newest first, and linked so you can read them in full. Only two could be tied to this coast, and bites here change with the wind, the rain and how close you stay to the lagoons.

  • Pérols and Palavas-les-Flots · 2025

Comparing Pérols and Palavas-les-Flots for a family holiday, a poster said Pérols might have more tiger mosquitoes, which come out during the day, than Palavas; a reply said the species has spread across the south of France and can be recognized by its black-and-white stripes. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Montpellier area coast · summer · 2015

In a thread about summer 2015, a poster said there were more mosquitoes than usual that year, citing a regional bulletin that aerial treatments had been used in some coastal towns, and said the usual wetland areas, such as the Camargue and the coastal lagoons, are much more affected than inland. One rule outlasts the trip. A fever, rash, severe headache or joint pain during or within two weeks after the trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in the Montpellier or Nîmes area, where local chikungunya and dengue have occurred.

Traveler questions

Are there mosquitoes in Montpellier?

Yes, mostly the tiger mosquito, a small, striped daytime biter that works gardens, café terraces, shady lanes and pool areas, with peaks in the morning and late afternoon. Along the coast, salt-marsh mosquitoes from the lagoons add bites at dusk in Palavas, Carnon and Pérols. Put repellent on at breakfast and again in the late afternoon, and sleep with the windows shut or a plug-in vaporizer running.

Was there chikungunya around Montpellier and Nîmes?

Yes, in 2025. Santé publique France's final report counts 43 local cases in the Hérault, all around Montpellier and its hinterland, including 17 in Castries and 12 in Mauguio, and 42 in the Gard, including 10 in Nîmes. ECDC, which groups some of the Gard clusters differently, lists 36 there. 2026 was much quieter, with none in the Hérault and only the Aigues-Mortes cluster in the Gard. The tiger mosquito spreads it by day, so the morning and late-afternoon repellent habit is the protection.

Are the beaches at Palavas and Sète bad for mosquitoes?

They tend to be milder than the Camargue's marshes. Salt-marsh mosquitoes breed in the Palavas lagoons, the Étang de l'Or and the Thau lagoon, and a public agency, EID Méditerranée, treats breeding sites along this coast. Waves still come after rain and high water, still and humid evenings are the worst, and a strong mistral or tramontane tends to ground them. Reapply before dinner by the water. Sète also had 2 local dengue cases in July 2026.

Do I need vaccines or malaria pills for Montpellier?

CDC recommends no malaria medicine for France, and on yellow fever its France page says "Vaccine is not recommended" and "Vaccine is not required." CDC has no travel notice and no vaccine recommendation for a mosquito-borne disease in mainland France. If you have questions about your own health or a long stay, a travel clinic visit 4–6 weeks before departure is the place to raise them.
