Provence's tiger mosquitoes bite by day, and 2026 was a record West Nile year. One routine covers both.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
The Asian tiger mosquito is a daytime fixture on terraces and in village lanes from Marseille to Avignon. Night biters spread a record West Nile season in 2026, with 37 local cases in the Bouches-du-Rhône and 18 in the Vaucluse. For a visitor these infections are rare. Repellent at breakfast and dusk and a closed room at night handle them.
Yes, and they bite in daylight. The Asian tiger mosquito is established across Provence and bites on café terraces, in gardens and in shady village lanes, from Marseille and Aix to Avignon and the Luberon. Nearly 40% of France's record 2026 West Nile cases were infected in Provence and the neighboring Riviera. For a visitor these infections are rare, and one routine, repellent by day and a closed room at night, covers both.
A daytime biter on every terrace
ECDC, Europe's disease agency, calls the tiger mosquito a serious biting nuisance in southern France. Marseille and its suburbs, Avignon and the Vaucluse are among the worst areas. It is small, striped and active by day, with peaks in the morning and late afternoon, around terraces, courtyards, potted plants and pools. Bite levels tend to vary a lot from one town, or one garden, to the next.
Put repellent on at breakfast, over sunscreen, and again in the late afternoon. After dark, Culex mosquitoes, the West Nile carriers, come in through unscreened windows, and they tend to breed in drains, irrigation ditches and the Rhône and Durance river plains. Pick a room with air conditioning or screens, or buy a plug-in vaporizer at a supermarket, and keep the windows shut at night. The mistral tends to keep mosquitoes down, and still, hot evenings tend to be the bad ones. Our repellent timing guide shows how long one coat lasts.
West Nile, dengue and chikungunya
2026 set a West Nile record in France, and Provence led it. In its national bulletin of October 27, Santé publique France, the national public health agency, counted 37 locally acquired cases in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the most of any department, with onsets from June 25 to October 12, and 18 in the Vaucluse. Its regional bulletin of October 28 put the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur total at 75, including 20 in the Var on the Riviera, and said 45% of those patients were hospitalized. In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, home to the Valensole lavender plateau, the virus turned up in a horse, its first detection in that department. Towns of infection aren't published. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older.
The tiger mosquito spreads dengue and chikungunya. In 2025 the Bouches-du-Rhône had more than 100 local chikungunya cases, mostly in towns around Marseille, led by Vitrolles with 47 and Roquevaire with 18, plus 15 dengue cases in Aubagne and Rognac. The Vaucluse's recent clusters were in the north of the department, away from Avignon and the Luberon. 2026 was much quieter, with no local chikungunya in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Vaucluse or the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and 2 dengue cases in Marseille in August.
Local cases start early here. In 2025 a chikungunya cluster in Salon-de-Provence began in mid-June, and 2026's West Nile onsets began on June 25, though most cases fall from July to September. Spring and October trips still meet the tiger mosquito, active from May to November, with fewer bites. CDC has no travel notice for mainland France, lists no malaria medicine and says the yellow fever vaccine is neither recommended nor required. Its France page also lists leishmaniasis, spread by sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn.
Where you're going
How the main stops compare for a June–September trip.
Marseille, the Calanques & the cruise port
Marseille had 2 local dengue cases in August 2026, and nearby towns had big chikungunya clusters in 2025, led by Vitrolles with 47. The Calanques tend to be dry and windy, and cruise passengers ashore by day need only a morning coat of repellent.
Aix-en-Provence
One local chikungunya case in 2025 and none in 2026. Fountains, courtyards and plane-tree terraces are the shady spots the day-biting tiger mosquito favors, so put repellent on before a long café afternoon.
Luberon villages: Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux & Lourmarin
No local dengue or chikungunya here in 2024–2026, though the Vaucluse had 18 West Nile cases in 2026, with towns not published. Tiger mosquito trouble varies from village to village, so carry repellent for terrace dinners.
Lavender country: Valensole, Sault & Sénanque
Open plateaus visited by day, likely with few mosquitoes. ECDC counted no human West Nile case in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in 2024–2026, though in 2026 the virus was found in a horse there for the first time.

The Provence kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat and layers over sunscreen. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- Oil of lemon eucalyptus 30%: the plant-based option among EPA-registered repellents. Not for children under 3.
- A plug-in vaporizer for an unscreened room without air conditioning.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from three TripAdvisor threads and linked so you can read them in full. One is from 2026 and the other two are more than a decade old, and bites in Provence vary a lot with where you stay.
- Avignon and Provence · May to November · 2026
A May 2026 post described the Asian tiger mosquito as a significant problem in the region and said it is most active from May through November. TripAdvisor ↗
- Roussillon (Luberon) · late July · 2012
In a May 2012 thread, a Canadian visitor planning a late-July stay asked how bad mosquitoes and wasps are in Provence. One reply said they had never been troubled by mosquitoes in Provence, and another said plug-in devices in each room worked very well. TripAdvisor ↗
- Vaucluse (Bédoin and the Luberon area)
In a thread roughly 15 years old, a poster said the tiger mosquito had become the area's most troublesome pest since a colony settled in the south, and that one village can be badly infested while the next is fine, depending on the season and where you stay. A visitor who stayed in Bédoin said they never had a mosquito problem there, and another said coastal areas and waterways are a different story; one reply suggested a high-DEET spray. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. A fever, rash, severe headache or joint pain during or within two weeks after the trip means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in Provence, where West Nile and dengue circulated in 2026.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes in Provence?
Yes. The tiger mosquito, which ECDC calls a serious biting nuisance in southern France, bites by day on terraces, in gardens, in old-town lanes and by the pool, from Marseille and Aix to Avignon and the Luberon. It is patchy, so one stay can be much worse than the next. Night-biting Culex comes in through unscreened windows. Repellent at breakfast and before dinner outdoors, plus a room with air conditioning or a plug-in vaporizer, covers it.
Is West Nile a risk in Provence?
A small one, in a record year. Santé publique France counted 37 local cases in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the most of any French department, and 18 in the Vaucluse in 2026 as of October 26. Its regional bulletin of October 28 put the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur total at 75, with 45% of patients hospitalized. Towns of infection aren't published. Most infections cause no symptoms, and ECDC notes that severe illness falls mostly on people 65 and older, so take the evening routine most seriously if you're in that group.
Was there chikungunya in Marseille?
Not in 2026. In 2025 the Bouches-du-Rhône had more than 100 local cases, mostly in towns around Marseille, with the largest clusters in Vitrolles (47) and Roquevaire (18) and a handful in Marseille itself. In 2026 there was no local chikungunya in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the Vaucluse or the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Marseille did have 2 local dengue cases in August 2026. Both viruses travel on the day-biting tiger mosquito, so daytime repellent covers them.
Do I need repellent for the lavender fields or the Calanques?
Less than in town. The lavender plateaus are open, sunny daytime visits and tend to have few mosquitoes, and the Calanques are dry limestone where the mistral often blows. A morning coat of repellent covers both. The lavender bloom, roughly late June to July, comes before the late-summer peak in local cases.
