The Mekong Delta needs no malaria pills. Its 2026 dengue season needs a daily routine.

CDC reports only rare malaria in the delta and recommends no prevention medicine there. Dengue is the reason to be careful. Vietnam's south carries about 71% of the country's 2026 cases, and the delta's provinces reported sharp rises this year, so day boats need morning repellent and homestay nights need long sleeves and a net.

Yes, and in 2026 the delta sits inside Vietnam's busiest dengue region. Dengue mosquitoes bite by day at markets, orchards and boat landings, and paddy and canal mosquitoes take over around homestays at dusk. CDC reports "rare cases in the Mekong and Red River Deltas" and recommends no malaria medicine there.

A sharp dengue year in the south

The World Health Organization counted 131,202 dengue cases and 18 deaths in Vietnam through September 20, 2026, 37.4% above the same period of 2025, with about 71% in the southern region. Health departments in Can Tho, Vinh Long, Dong Thap and An Giang, the provinces on most delta routes, reported sharp rises in 2026, starting early in the year, according to Vietnamese press reports. A 2026 analysis of national data for 1998–2020 names the Mekong Delta among Vietnam's key dengue high-risk zones, with peaks mainly from June to November. Vietnam is on CDC's global dengue list, and our Vietnam briefing covers the rest of the country.

The Aedes mosquito bites in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and before sunset. That covers the early boat to Cai Rang floating market and the orchard stops on My Tho and Ben Tre tours. Put repellent on over sunscreen before you board, then reapply after lunch and again before the late-afternoon peak. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule, and the Ho Chi Minh City briefing covers the city most delta trips start from.

Homestay nights and canal boats

From dusk, the paddy and canal mosquitoes take over. A 2009 survey of eight rice-growing areas in the delta found Culex mosquitoes, including the species that carry Japanese encephalitis, breeding in rice fields, ponds and canals in both the dry and rainy seasons. Homestay evenings, with dinner in the garden and rooms open to the river, are the main exposure. Change into light long sleeves and pants before dinner, and sleep under the net the homestay usually provides, checked for holes and tucked in, or in an air-conditioned room. On shaded boat trips through the Tra Su forest or the coastal mangroves, cover ankles and arms before you board.

Malaria and Japanese encephalitis

CDC places Vietnam's malaria in "Rural areas only; rare cases in the Mekong and Red River Deltas," and for the two deltas it says "No chemoprophylaxis recommended (insect bite precautions and mosquito avoidance only)."

If you're staying overnight in the countryside. CDC says to "Consider vaccination" against Japanese encephalitis for shorter trips that include "visiting rural areas, hiking or camping, or staying in places without air conditioning, screens, or bed nets." Orchard and rice-country homestays fit that wording on our reading. CDC recommends the vaccine for a month or more in such areas and calls it "Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas," which is closer to a day trip with nights in a Saigon hotel. Take your plan to a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.

Zika has circulated in Vietnam, so pregnant travelers should talk to a healthcare provider before the trip.

When to go

The delta's rains run roughly May to November. The dry months, roughly January to April, are the easier stretch, though 2026 showed they aren't dengue-free. July to November tends to be the hardest, and An Giang's health officials have described October and November as the yearly peak, according to Vietnamese press reports.

The Mekong kit

For day boats and a homestay night or two.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and rides in a carry-on.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for homestay clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light pants at home 48 hours before you fly. It goes on clothing, never on skin.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from two TripAdvisor threads and linked so you can read them in full. Neither is dated, and bites in the delta vary with the season and where you sleep.

  • Mekong Delta

In a thread about malaria in the delta, a poster said malaria pills were not needed in Vietnam and that dengue, for which there is no preventive medicine, was more of a concern. TripAdvisor ↗

  • My Tho

In a malaria thread for My Tho, a reply recommended Remos, a local repellent sold in supermarkets, and suggested bringing repellent for the trip. TripAdvisor ↗

One rule outlasts the trip. A fever during the trip or within two weeks of getting home means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in the Mekong Delta and mention dengue. Bitten in a dengue zone has the 14-day calendar.

Traveler questions

Do I need malaria pills for the Mekong Delta?

CDC places Vietnam's malaria in "Rural areas only; rare cases in the Mekong and Red River Deltas," and for the two deltas it says "No chemoprophylaxis recommended (insect bite precautions and mosquito avoidance only)." CDC names no individual delta province. Its table predates Vietnam's 2025 province mergers, and former Long An province, on the delta's northern edge, is now part of Tây Ninh, a name CDC lists for medicine, so ask a travel clinic if you're staying there.

How bad is dengue in the Mekong Delta right now?

2026 has been a heavy year. The World Health Organization counted 131,202 cases in Vietnam through September 20, 37.4% above the same period of 2025, with about 71% in the southern region. Health departments in Can Tho, Vinh Long, Dong Thap and An Giang reported sharp rises in 2026, according to Vietnamese press reports. The mosquito bites by day, so repellent goes on over sunscreen before the morning boat and again before the late afternoon.

Should I get the Japanese encephalitis vaccine for a Mekong homestay?

Ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure. CDC says to "Consider vaccination" for travelers spending less than a month in areas with the disease who will be "visiting rural areas, hiking or camping, or staying in places without air conditioning, screens, or bed nets," and an orchard or rice-country homestay fits that wording on our reading. It recommends the vaccine for stays of a month or more and calls it "Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas."

Can I swim in the Mekong or the canals?

Better not. CDC lists leptospirosis and schistosomiasis for Vietnam and advises travelers to "Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers," which covers the delta's rivers and canals. Wade as little as you can, too.
