Ha Long Bay's mosquitoes tend to wait at the island and cave stops.
- CDC Level 1 Global dengue (Vietnam listed)
- Travel clinic CDC recommends medicine or vaccines for some areas · which ones
Travelers tend to report few mosquitoes on the overnight boats and more ashore, at the caves, the islands and Cat Ba's forest. The CDC names Hai Phong among Vietnam's cities with no malaria, and a standard cruise falls outside its rural malaria wording. Northern dengue peaks from September to November.
Yes, though most of them stay on land. Travelers tend to report few mosquitoes on the overnight boats out on the bay and more at the island, cave and kayak stops, in Ha Long city and on Cat Ba. CDC names Hai Phong, the city Cat Ba belongs to, among Vietnam's cities with no malaria, and a standard cruise falls outside its "rural areas" malaria wording. Our Hanoi briefing covers the city where most trips start.
On the water and ashore
The boats spend their nights over salt water, and travelers on overnight cruises in Ha Long, Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha bays tend to see few mosquitoes on board. Repellent for evenings on deck and early mornings is usually enough. Put it on over sunscreen before the transfer from Hanoi and again before each cave, island or kayak stop, where the bites tend to come.
On land, the day-biting Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue lives around the Bai Chay hotel strip, the Tuan Chau marina and Cat Ba town. Cat Ba National Park's trails run through shaded forest, and the island's mangroves breed mosquitoes, so wear long, light clothes on a hike and choose an air-conditioned or screened room.
Dengue in the north
Hanoi's figures are the best guide to the north's dengue year. The city's Center for Disease Control counted 4,860 cases from January 1 to mid-October 2026, below its 2021–2025 average for the period, Vietnamese press reported, and it describes September to November as the yearly peak. Nationally, cases through September 20 were about 37% above 2025, with roughly 71% in the south, the World Health Organization reported. Vietnam is on CDC's global dengue list, a Level 1 notice.
The mosquito bites by day, with peaks after sunrise and before sunset, so be strict with the morning coat from September to November. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.
Malaria and Japanese encephalitis
CDC's Vietnam page places malaria in "Rural areas only; rare cases in the Mekong and Red River Deltas" and reports "None in the cities of Da Nang, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Nha Trang, and Quy Nhon." It doesn't name Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba or Quang Ninh. Nights on a boat at sea and a stay in Ha Long city or Cat Ba town fall outside that rural wording, but Cat Ba's park interior and villages are rural, and CDC's text doesn't settle the outlying islands.
When to ask a clinic. Village homestays, camping on the islands or a month or more in the north are a question for a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure. The same visit can cover Japanese encephalitis vaccine, which CDC recommends for a month or more and suggests considering for shorter stays with "visiting rural areas, hiking or camping, or staying in places without air conditioning, screens, or bed nets." It is "Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas," and a one- or two-night cruise in an air-conditioned cabin isn't what CDC describes.
When to go
The cool, drier months, roughly December to April, are the easiest for bites. Typhoons from about July to October can cancel cruises, and northern dengue peaks from September to November, so the clearer fall weather overlaps the dengue season. Dengue is reported in every month.
Where you're going
Overnight cruises: Ha Long, Bai Tu Long & Lan Ha
Nights on board over salt water, where travelers tend to see few or no mosquitoes. Repellent for evenings on deck and early mornings is usually enough, and an air-conditioned cabin helps.
Sung Sot Cave & Ti Top Island
The standard daytime stops on a Ha Long cruise, and where travelers say the bites come. Put repellent on before you go ashore.
Cat Ba town & Cat Ba National Park
Cat Ba belongs to Hai Phong, which the CDC lists among the cities with no malaria, but the park interior and villages are rural and the CDC doesn't address them. Long sleeves and repellent on the forest trails, and ask a clinic before homestays or camping.
Bai Chay & Tuan Chau (Ha Long city)
The hotel strip and cruise marinas where most trips start. The dengue mosquito bites here by day, so a morning coat covers the transfer and boarding.
Heading south afterward? Our Vietnam briefing covers Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc.
The Ha Long Bay kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless, layers over sunscreen and goes back on easily before each stop. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- A light long-sleeved layer and long pants for evenings on deck and Cat Ba's forest trails.

- Ha Long Bay overnight cruises
Asked whether mosquito nets are needed on a Ha Long Bay cruise, several travelers said they saw few or no mosquitoes on overnight junk trips, but advised bringing repellent anyway for evenings and early mornings. TripAdvisor ↗
- Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays · December
In a thread about mosquitoes on a December trip to Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays, one poster said they had been told there is virtually no malaria risk around the bay and the coast, and others said they used repellent rather than antimalarials. TripAdvisor ↗
If you're pregnant, talk to a healthcare provider before the trip, because Zika has circulated in Vietnam. And any fever during or within two weeks after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Vietnam. If you do get bitten, bitten in a dengue zone has the honest odds.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes on a Ha Long Bay cruise?
Not many on the boats. Travelers on overnight junk cruises tend to report few or no mosquitoes on board, out on the bay's salt water, and more at the island and cave stops. Bring repellent for evenings on deck and early mornings, and put it on before you go ashore at stops like Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island.
Do I need malaria pills for Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba?
CDC places Vietnam's malaria in "Rural areas only; rare cases in the Mekong and Red River Deltas" and reports none in the city of Hai Phong, which Cat Ba belongs to. It doesn't name Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba. A standard cruise and a stay in Ha Long city or Cat Ba town fall outside that rural wording. Village homestays, camping on the islands or a long stay are a question for a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure.
Do I need the Japanese encephalitis vaccine for Ha Long Bay?
CDC says it is "Not recommended for travelers planning short-term travel to urban areas," recommends it for a month or more in areas with the disease, and suggests considering it for shorter stays with rural visits, hiking or camping, or nights without air conditioning, screens or bed nets. A one- or two-night cruise in an air-conditioned cabin isn't what CDC describes. Cat Ba homestays and national park hikes come closer, so ask a travel clinic.
When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay for fewer mosquitoes?
Roughly December to April, the cool, drier months, though February and March are often misty on the bay. August to November is the hardest stretch, as northern dengue builds to its September–November peak, and typhoons from about July to October can cancel cruises. Dengue is reported in every month, so keep the daytime repellent habit whenever you go.
