Dengue in 2026, district by district

After record years in 2023 and 2024, when Peru passed 250,000 dengue cases in each, and a quiet 2025, dengue is rising again. The national epidemiology center, CDC-MINSA, counted 5,980 cases in Lima department, which includes the capital, through early October 2026, with 3 deaths. That is 51.59 per 100,000, about a quarter of the national rate of 192.88. Its October 16 El Niño alert flagged 28 districts in Lima with rising cases over the previous six weeks.

The city's health networks show where. DIRIS Lima Centro counted 1,461 locally acquired cases in its districts through October 16, against well under 100 in all of 2025. San Juan de Lurigancho, an outer district, had 1,251 of them, and Cercado de Lima, the historic center, had 100. Miraflores had 6 and San Isidro 3. In the north, DIRIS Lima Norte's 2,938 cases through October 14 were led by Carabayllo (784) and Puente Piedra (746).

The CDC's Peru page lists "No malaria transmission in the following areas: Lima Province," naming the city of Ica and the "central and southern Pacific Coast" in the same list. It doesn't recommend the yellow fever vaccine for "the city of Lima (the capital)" or for "areas west of the Andes not listed above," which takes in Ica and Paracas, and Peru doesn't require it for entry. It also notes elevated chikungunya risk, spread by the same mosquito as dengue. Separately, Peru's measles emergency, extended in August 2026, includes districts in Lima Metropolitana, so check your MMR vaccination.

A light routine for the city and the day trips

Bites are few, and the exceptions tend to be parks at dawn and dusk and the Pantanos de Villa wetlands in Chorrillos. The dengue mosquito breeds in household water containers and bites by day, and most of the city's cases are in the outer residential districts. From December to April, and this year already in October, put repellent on over sunscreen before a historic-center walk or a visit to the outer districts, and again in the late afternoon for the clifftop parks of Miraflores and Barranco. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

The day trips are mostly dry. Pachacámac, the adobe temple complex about 19 miles (30 km) south of central Lima, is an open desert site inside Lima Province. Paracas and the Ballestas Islands are dry and windy. Huacachina's lagoon and palms, just outside Ica, are the one patch of standing water and greenery in the dunes, so pack repellent for sunset there. Ica region had 584 dengue cases and no deaths through early October, a rate of 53.41 per 100,000, close to Lima department's.

When to go

Lima's warm, sunny summer runs from about December to April, and its cool, gray winter from about June to October, under the coastal fog called garúa. June to November is the easy stretch for bites. February to April, the warmest weeks, is normally Peru's dengue peak. 2026 broke the pattern. DIRIS Lima Centro was still adding 19 to 57 local cases a week from mid-September to mid-October, and PAHO expects El Niño to intensify as South America's peak season approaches, so the 2026–27 summer could be busy.

city

Miraflores & Barranco

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Occasional

The clifftop districts where most visitors stay. Miraflores had 6 locally acquired dengue cases in 2026 to mid-October, and travelers rarely report bites; the clifftop parks at dawn and dusk are the likeliest spots.

city

The historic center

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Hardly any

Cercado de Lima had 100 locally acquired dengue cases in 2026 to mid-October, the second-highest count in its health network, against 6 in 2025. Put repellent on over sunscreen before a walking tour, especially in summer.

beach

Paracas & the Ballestas Islands

Disease risk LowBite nuisance Hardly any

About 155 miles (250 km) south in Ica region, dry and windy, where the CDC lists no malaria and doesn't recommend the yellow fever vaccine. Sun and wind matter more than bites on the boat trip.

countryside

Huacachina & Ica

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Occasional

The lagoon and palms are the one patch of standing water and greenery in the dunes, so an evening by the water is the likeliest place for a bite on the southern day trips. Ica region's dengue rate was close to Lima department's in 2026.

Most trips continue to Machu Picchu & Cusco, with its daytime biting flies, or to the Peruvian Amazon, the leg that needs a travel clinic.

The Lima kit

Small, for city days and a Huacachina sunset. The second is the plant-based option.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless, layers over sunscreen and fits a day bag for a walking tour. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus 30%: the plant-based option among EPA-registered repellents. Not for children under 3.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor forum threads and linked so you can read them in full. Only one gives a year (2024), and Lima's dengue picture changed in 2026, so read them for how much biting to expect rather than for disease risk.

  • Miraflores, Lima · 2024

Answering a visitor's question about bugs, a poster based in Miraflores said they had seen a few mosquitoes and some smaller biting insects but had never been bitten, and that a hotel guest in Miraflores need not worry unless in parks at dawn or dusk; another said Lima's summer heat brings no real bug problem. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Miraflores, Lima · August-September

In a thread about visiting in August, one poster said they had never been bitten by a mosquito in Miraflores, and another said mosquitoes were not an issue in Lima in August or September, guessing that the pollution keeps them away. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Lima, Ica and Paracas · November

Several posters reported few or no mosquitoes in Lima, and one said mosquitoes were more of a problem outside the city around Ica and Paracas. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Lima

Asked about flying bugs, a reply said Lima has essentially none, the exceptions being Villa, the beach suburbs by the marshes, and places about an hour outside the city. TripAdvisor ↗

One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during the trip or within two weeks of returning means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor where in Peru you were.

Traveler questions

Is there dengue in Miraflores?

Very little. The DIRIS Lima Centro health network counted 6 locally acquired cases in Miraflores in 2026 through mid-October, a rate of 4.88 per 100,000, against 1 in 2025. The district's health centers notified 91 cases, most of them infections caught elsewhere. Lima's local transmission is concentrated in outer districts such as San Juan de Lurigancho. The dengue mosquito bites by day, so a morning coat of repellent makes sense in summer, especially for the historic center.

Do I need malaria pills or a yellow fever vaccine for Lima?

The CDC lists "No malaria transmission" for Lima Province, the city of Ica and the central and southern Pacific coast, and it does not recommend the yellow fever vaccine for "the city of Lima (the capital)" or for areas west of the Andes that it doesn't list. Peru doesn't require the vaccine for entry. If you're flying on to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado, see a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure about that leg; our Peruvian Amazon briefing has the details.

When is the best time to visit Lima for fewer mosquitoes?

June to November, the cool, gray months under the coastal fog. February to April, the warmest weeks, is normally when Peru's dengue peaks. In 2026, local cases in central Lima were still being added in October, and PAHO expects El Niño to intensify as South America's peak season approaches, so a December to April trip calls for the daytime habit.

Are the day trips to Paracas and Huacachina buggy?

Mostly not. Paracas is dry and windy, and Pachacámac is an open desert site where sun matters more than bugs. Huacachina's lagoon and palms are the likeliest place for a bite, especially in the evening. Ica region had 584 dengue cases and no deaths through early October 2026, a rate close to Lima department's, and the CDC lists no malaria for the city of Ica or the southern coast.
