Chikungunya is Bahia's 2026 story. The yellow fever question depends on the state.
- Travel clinic CDC recommends medicine or vaccines for some areas · which ones
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
CDC recommends yellow fever vaccine for designated areas of Bahia, and its map shades Salvador and the coast north toward Sergipe. It doesn't for Recife or Fortaleza. Bahia's chikungunya count was up 371% on 2025 by late September, carried by the same daytime mosquito as dengue.
Yes, and the one that matters bites in daylight. Aedes aegypti carries dengue, chikungunya and Zika along this coast, and Bahia's chikungunya count was up 371% on 2025 by late September 2026. The CDC recommends yellow fever vaccine for designated areas of Bahia, and its map shades Salvador, while trips limited to Recife or Fortaleza don't need it. There is no malaria in Bahia, Pernambuco or Ceará.
Yellow fever advice covers Salvador, not Recife or Fortaleza
What CDC says: yellow fever vaccine "is recommended for travelers ≥9 months old going to the states of" a list that ends with "Tocantins, and designated areas of Bahia." It adds that the vaccine "is not recommended for travel limited to any areas not listed above, including the cities of Fortaleza and Recife." Under entry requirements: "Vaccine is not required." CDC's yellow fever map for Brazil shades Salvador, Feira de Santana and the Bahia coast north to the Sergipe border, Praia do Forte included, as vaccination recommended, and all of Pernambuco and Ceará as not recommended. Its malaria map shows all three states with no known malaria transmission. What we suggest you do with this: book a travel-medicine appointment 4–6 weeks before departure and bring your whole Brazil route.
Chikungunya's big year in Bahia
Bahia's health department, SESAB, counted 10,503 probable chikungunya cases in its report of September 28, 2026, with data through epidemiological week 38. That was 371% more than in the same period of 2025, with 3 confirmed deaths. The hardest-hit places were mostly inland towns, led by Alagoinhas, Rio Real and Muritiba. Dengue went the other way, with 24,374 probable cases and 13 confirmed deaths, down 14.7% on 2025. ECDC named Bahia, Alagoas and Pernambuco among Brazil's most affected chikungunya states in August.
The mosquito behind all three diseases bites in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon. Put repellent on over sunscreen in the morning, again in the afternoon and after swimming, and keep the room's windows shut with the air conditioning on. Sheltered gardens, lagoons and mangroves tend to hold more biters than an open, breezy beachfront. Our dengue & Zika daily routine has the full schedule.
Oropouche, spread mainly by a tiny biting midge most active at dusk and early evening, barely registered in Bahia in 2025, with 11 confirmed cases through early August by PAHO's count. Pernambuco's health department says it has been present in parts of that state, the Recife metropolitan region included, since 2024. Repellent on ankles and lower legs at dusk covers most midge bites. Pregnant travelers should discuss Zika and Oropouche with a healthcare provider.
When to go
On this coast the rains set the calendar. Fortaleza's health department counts January to May as the rainy season, when Aedes peak in homes, and July to December as the low stretch. Salvador and Recife tend to get most of their rain from about April to July. That makes roughly September to December the easiest months. Chikungunya broke the pattern in 2026 and stayed active in Bahia into August and September. Carnival in Salvador and Recife–Olinda falls in February in 2027, before the main rains, and a health ministry model says the 2026/27 dengue season may be more intense than 2025's in Bahia and Ceará.
Where you're going
Pelourinho & Salvador's old town
Inside the area CDC's map shades for yellow fever vaccine. The dengue mosquito bites by day, so repellent goes on before a morning walk through the old town, and again in the late afternoon.
Praia do Forte & the Linha Verde
The resort village north of Salvador falls inside CDC's mapped yellow fever area. Towns in the region around it, including Catu, Pojuca and Conde, had chikungunya rates of about 280 to 440 per 100,000 in 2026.
Porto de Galinhas
In Pernambuco, outside CDC's yellow fever recommendation and any malaria area. Dengue and chikungunya are endemic, so the daytime routine applies on the beach as in Bahia.
Jericoacoara
A dune village in Ceará, outside CDC's yellow fever recommendation and any malaria area. Fortaleza's health department counts January to May as the rainy season, when Aedes peak, and July to December as the low stretch.
The Brazil briefing covers the Amazon and the Pantanal, and our Rio de Janeiro briefing covers the city and its Carnival.
The northeast kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and fits a beach bag.
- A full-size backup in the checked bag for Carnival week or a longer stay, when sweat and long days mean reapplying every few hours.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and linked so you can read them in full. Neither gives a year, and firsthand reports for this coast are thin.
- Bahia beach property
Asked about mosquitoes and bugs at a beach property, a poster said it depends on the weather and on standing water near the beach, found mosquitoes mostly active at night and daytime relatively safe, and suggested repellent mainly for the evenings. TripAdvisor ↗
- Jericoacoara · dry season
In a thread about Zika risk, a reply said it was the dry season there, which lowers the risk, and that they had worn plenty of repellent and had no problem. TripAdvisor ↗
One rule outlasts the trip. Any fever or joint pain during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in northeast Brazil. If you were bitten, bitten in a dengue zone covers what to watch for.
Traveler questions
Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for Salvador?
Brazil does not require it for entry. As health advice, the CDC recommends it for travelers 9 months and older going to "designated areas of Bahia," and its yellow fever map shades Salvador and the coast north toward Sergipe, Praia do Forte included. Whether the vaccine fits your trip is a decision for a travel clinic, 4–6 weeks before departure. Bring your whole Brazil route, since the recommendation also covers Rio de Janeiro, the Amazon and Iguaçu Falls.
What about Recife, Porto de Galinhas and Fortaleza?
CDC says the yellow fever vaccine "is not recommended for travel limited to any areas not listed above, including the cities of Fortaleza and Recife," and its map shows all of Pernambuco and Ceará outside the recommendation. None of the three northeastern states needs malaria medicine. Dengue, chikungunya and Zika are endemic there too, so the daytime repellent routine is the same as in Bahia.
Is chikungunya a risk in Bahia right now?
It's the one to plan around in 2026. Bahia's health department counted 10,503 probable cases through late September, 371% more than in the same period of 2025, and the hardest-hit places were mostly inland towns. Dengue was down 14.7% on 2025. Both spread through the same day-biting mosquito, so repellent over sunscreen in the morning and again in the afternoon covers both. The CDC says chikungunya vaccination may be considered for stays of about six months or more.
When is the best time to visit Salvador for fewer mosquitoes?
Roughly September to December, after the rains. Salvador and Recife tend to get most of their rain from about April to July, which makes March to July the harder stretch. Carnival falls in February in 2027, before the main rains. Chikungunya stayed active in Bahia into August and September 2026, and a health ministry model says the 2026/27 dengue season may be more intense than 2025's in Bahia, so keep the daytime routine in any month.
