Yes. Mosquitoes at dusk and in the evening are the usual complaint around Goa's beach shacks and huts, and dengue rose in the 2026 monsoon, mostly in South Goa. The CDC recommends prescription malaria medicine for travel throughout India below 6,500 feet, which includes all of Goa, so a beach trip starts with a travel-clinic visit.

The CDC's malaria advice covers Goa

The CDC's India page places malaria transmission "Throughout the country, including the cities of Bombay (Mumbai) and New Delhi (the capital)," with none in areas above 2,000 m (6,500 ft). All of Goa sits below that line. Goa's health officials told The Goan in April 2026 that the state has had no locally acquired malaria since about 2022 and has applied for malaria-free certification, but the CDC has not changed its listing, and its advice stands.

The CDC's recommendation. "CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of India take prescription medicine to prevent malaria." For India it lists "Atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine, tafenoquine." Book a travel-medicine appointment 4–6 weeks before departure and bring your dates and where you'll sleep. Which medicine, if any, fits you is the clinician's call.

Yellow fever vaccine isn't needed when you fly from the US, though India requires proof from travelers 9 months or older arriving from countries it lists as having yellow fever risk.

Dengue after the monsoon

Goa went into 2026 with low dengue numbers. The state ended 2025 with around 100 cases, its fewest in more than a decade, and counted 11 from January to April 2026, The Goan reported, citing the Directorate of Health Services. Officials said most were among migrant workers at construction sites and temporary settlements.

The monsoon brought a rise. In July the directorate counted 7 confirmed and nearly 900 suspected cases, most of them in South Goa, and the hospital laboratory in Margao logged about 70 positive tests in the first ten days of August, the same paper reported. Nationally, India's count through September 2026 was close to 2025's, the World Health Organization reported.

Aedes bite in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon, so repellent goes on over sunscreen in the morning and again before the beach at sunset. Our dengue & Zika routine has the schedule. The same mosquito carries chikungunya, an elevated risk in India per the CDC, and Zika, so pregnant travelers should talk to a healthcare provider first.

Beach huts and sunset shacks

Dusk and evening bites cluster around beach shacks, hut resorts and river mouths, in the same hours malaria mosquitoes keep. Basic beach huts usually come with a net, but reviewers in Palolem and Arambol describe some as old or holed, so check yours before the first night or pack one, and run the fan. Put repellent on before sunset dinners on the sand and add long, light layers after dark.

When to go

Beach shacks run roughly November to May, and December to February is the busiest, driest stretch. Goa's dengue rises with the monsoon, roughly June to September, and India's national peak follows it, so an early-November trip can catch the tail. The CDC's malaria advice applies in every month.

South Goa had all 7 confirmed dengue cases and most suspected ones in July 2026, with a cluster around Margao in August. Hut nets vary, so check yours, and expect most bites around dusk.

Daytime sightseeing at the churches and in Fontainhas, where the day-biting dengue mosquito is the one to cover for. The CDC's malaria advice applies here too.

Forested inland day trips inside the CDC's malaria area. The CDC says to consider Japanese encephalitis vaccine for rural stays, which a day trip usually isn't, and repellent before you set off covers the day.

Adding Delhi, Agra or the Kerala backwaters? The India briefing covers the rest of the country.

The Goa kit

The spray covers a beach week. Add the permethrin for evenings on the sand.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and works against both day and night biters. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for evening clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers at home 48 hours before you fly. Treated fabric repels and kills mosquitoes on contact through several washes. It goes on clothing, never on skin. Pack a light bed net too if you're staying in basic huts.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from TripAdvisor threads and a review and linked so you can read them in full. Most aren't dated, one describes a 2017 trip, and forum opinions on repellents don't replace the CDC's malaria advice and a clinic visit.

  • Agonda, South Goa · dusk

A forum poster said mosquitoes in Agonda are mainly a problem around dusk and that a lotion-type repellent worked well. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Goa · January (a 2017 trip)

Replies to a question about mosquitoes on a January trip were mixed on the local Odomos lotion: one regular said Odomos with Avon Skin So Soft dry oil kept bites away, others found it weaker than brands sold at home and suggested a higher-DEET product or plug-ins, and one poster called January the best time to go, with less humidity and fewer mosquitoes. TripAdvisor ↗

  • Papillon Beach Huts, Palolem

A guest praised the clean huts and said they came with bug nets and fans. TripAdvisor ↗

One more rule outlasts the trip. Any fever during your trip or in the year after it means a doctor visit, right away, and you tell them you were in India. Dengue usually shows up within two weeks; malaria can take much longer.

Traveler questions

Do I need malaria pills for Goa?

The CDC recommends prescription malaria prevention medicine for travel throughout India, "including the cities of Bombay (Mumbai) and New Delhi (the capital)," except areas above 2,000 m (6,500 ft). Goa is below that line, so the recommendation covers it, and the CDC lists atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, mefloquine and tafenoquine. Which one, if any, fits your health and dates is a call for a travel clinic, made 4–6 weeks before departure. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.

Is there dengue in Goa right now?

Dengue rose with the 2026 monsoon. In July, Goa's health services counted 7 confirmed and nearly 900 suspected cases, most of them in South Goa, The Goan reported, after a quiet first four months of the year. The newest local figures are from mid-August. India's dengue usually peaks after the monsoon, so wear repellent in the daytime as well as at dusk, especially on an early-season trip.

When is the best time to visit Goa for fewer mosquitoes?

December to February, the busiest and driest part of the beach season, comes after the monsoon and after India's post-monsoon dengue peak. An early-November trip can catch the tail of that peak. Keep the dusk routine whatever the month, and remember that the CDC's malaria advice applies year-round.

Do Goa beach huts have mosquito nets?

Basic huts usually do, but reviewers in Palolem and Arambol describe some nets as old or holed. Check yours for gaps before the first night, or pack a light net from home, and keep the fan on.
