National dengue unit figures reported in the press put the Southern Province second only to the Western Province by late August 2026, with Matara and Galle districts leading it. There's no malaria, and the sea breeze helps on the open beach.

Yes. Mosquitoes are the everyday nuisance from Galle Fort to Mirissa, and in 2026 they carried Sri Lanka's large dengue epidemic to this coast too. The island has been malaria-free since 2016, so what matters is a daytime repellent habit that survives swims and surf sessions, plus covered ankles on the beach at dusk.

The south coast's dengue year

Sri Lanka's 2026 epidemic passed 100,000 cases by late September, more than half of them in the Western Province around Colombo, and the island is on CDC's global dengue list. The south was the second focus. By late August, the Southern Province was second only to the Western Province, with Matara district (Mirissa, Weligama, Hiriketiya) and Galle district (Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa) leading it, according to National Dengue Control Unit data reported by the Sri Lankan news site Counterpoint. The unit had already flagged a significant spike in Galle and Matara in January, the news channel Newsfirst reported.

Nationally, cases peaked in July and fell through September, though mid-September was still about 90% above the same week of 2025, the World Health Organization reported. No district figures after August have been published.

The Aedes mosquitoes behind it bite by day, with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon, and they breed in standing water close to people; in Galle District, a study found their larvae in abandoned boats in 2017–2019. Put repellent on over sunscreen after breakfast, again after every swim or surf session and before the late-afternoon peak, and sleep in an air-conditioned room or under a net without holes. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

Malaria isn't on the list. WHO certified Sri Lanka malaria-free in 2016, with no locally acquired cases since October 2012, and CDC's Sri Lanka page makes no malaria medicine recommendation. CDC does list leishmaniasis, a skin infection spread by phlebotomine sand flies that bite from dusk to dawn. In Sri Lanka, cutaneous cases are most common in Hambantota district, home to Yala, and in Matara district, and they peak around June to August, so cover up at dusk there. Yellow fever vaccine isn't needed from the US. If you'll stay a month or more or travel rurally, ask a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure about Japanese encephalitis vaccine, and pregnant travelers should talk to a provider, since CDC lists Zika for Sri Lanka.

Beaches and guesthouses

Forum posters say the sea breeze helps on the open coast, and complaints tend to cluster in guesthouses and sheltered bays. Tiny biters that visitors call sand flies turn up on some beaches, so treat ankles and lower legs, use a lounger instead of a towel on the sand and cover up around sunset. Surfers at Weligama and Hiriketiya lose repellent to the water fastest, so a fresh coat goes on after every session.

When to go

The south coast's main season runs roughly December to April, when the southwest monsoon is off and the sea is calm. February to April tends to be the easier stretch for bites, since in 2026 dengue didn't wait for the rains here and spiked in January. May to August, under the monsoon, is the hardest. No month is dengue-free.

The south coast kit

Swims and surf sessions go through repellent quickly, so bring enough from home.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the humidity, layers over sunscreen and goes back on fast after a swim. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • A full-size backup in the checked bag for a two-week beach stay, a surf trip or a family.
  • Light long sleeves and trousers for dusk on the beach and evening drives at Yala.

Any fever during or within two weeks after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in Sri Lanka. In a year like this one, that sentence gets you a dengue test quickly. Bitten and worried? Bitten in a dengue zone has the 14-day calendar.

Traveler questions

Is there dengue in Galle and Mirissa?

Yes, and 2026 has been a hard year. By late August, the Southern Province was second only to the Western Province around Colombo, with Matara district, home to Mirissa and Weligama, and Galle district leading it, according to National Dengue Control Unit data reported by the Sri Lankan news site Counterpoint. Nationally, cases peaked in July and were falling by September, though still well above 2025. Repellent goes on over sunscreen after breakfast, after every swim and before the late afternoon.

Do I need malaria pills for the south coast?

The CDC lists no malaria medicine for Sri Lanka. WHO certified the country malaria-free on September 5, 2016, and there have been no locally acquired cases since October 2012. WHO says imported cases and the mosquitoes still present across the island keep a risk of reintroduction, which is one more reason to see a doctor for any fever after the trip.

When is the best time to visit the south coast for fewer bites?

Roughly February to April. The main beach season runs from about December, when the southwest monsoon is off, but in January 2026 Sri Lanka's dengue unit flagged a spike in Galle and Matara, so the dry season isn't dengue-free. May to August, when the monsoon wets this coast, is the hardest stretch, and the 2026 epidemic peaked nationally in July.

Do I need repellent on a whale-watching trip from Mirissa?

Mostly before and after. The boats leave the harbour at dawn and spend hours at sea, where mosquitoes are unlikely to be a factor. Put repellent on before you leave your room, since dawn is when the dengue mosquito starts feeding, and again when you're back on shore.
