The Falklands draw no bite complaints. The other ports on your cruise might.
- No CDC travel notice for mosquito-borne disease
No complaints about mosquitoes or other biting insects were found for Stanley, Volunteer Point or the outer islands, and the CDC lists no mosquito-borne disease. On a December–April cruise, pack for wind and cold here and save the bite planning for the other ports.
Are there mosquitoes in the Falkland Islands? No complaints about mosquitoes, or any other biting insect, were found for Stanley, Volunteer Point or the outer islands, and the CDC lists no mosquito-borne disease there. December to April is cruise season, and many ships call at Stanley on Antarctica itineraries from Ushuaia, so any bite planning belongs to the other ports on the route.
Wind, cold and no biters on record
The CDC's Falkland Islands page has no malaria, dengue or chikungunya section, and its Zika page lists the islands among areas with no mosquitoes that spread Zika. The CDC neither recommends nor requires the yellow fever vaccine. Falklands Conservation describes the common coastal insects as camel crickets, small flightless tussac moths and flightless kelp flies, and ties the many short-winged and wingless species to the high winds.
Seabird ticks infest black-browed albatross chicks on New Island, heavily enough to cut their growth and survival, a 2024 study found, and no source reports them biting visitors. Repellent is optional here, and wind and rain layers matter more.
The rest of the route
If your ship sails from Ushuaia, the start of the trip is low-key too. The CDC recommends neither malaria medicine nor yellow fever vaccine for Tierra del Fuego, and only one mosquito species has been collected that far south. The health item there is hantavirus, which comes from rodents; in April 2026 an outbreak spread on board the cruise ship MV Hondius after it sailed from Ushuaia. See a doctor for fever with muscle aches or breathing trouble within six weeks of a cruise from Ushuaia, and mention the cruise. Our Patagonia briefing covers both.
Longer South American cruises add ports with their own advice. If yours also calls at Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro, read our Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro briefings and check the CDC's yellow fever and dengue advice for each port. Chilean ports such as Punta Arenas are covered in our Chile briefing.
Where you're going
Stanley & the cruise port
The capital and cruise port, where ships anchor offshore and tender passengers in. No mosquito-borne disease and no insect complaints found.
Volunteer Point
The king penguin colony a few hours' drive from Stanley, much of it off-road. No bite reports found, so pack for wind and cold instead.
Sea Lion & Carcass islands
Outer islands reached by expedition ship or small plane. No insect reports found.
The Falklands kit
- Wind and rain layers for tender rides and penguin colonies.
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays if the cruise also calls at Buenos Aires or Brazilian ports. The 3.4 oz size rides in a carry-on.
As on any trip, a fever during or after it means a doctor visit, and you tell them every port you called at.
Traveler questions
Are there mosquitoes in the Falkland Islands?
None were reported. No official source or traveler account describes mosquitoes, midges or biting flies at Stanley, Volunteer Point, Sea Lion Island or Carcass Island, and the CDC lists no mosquito-borne disease for the islands. Falklands Conservation describes most of the common coastal insects as flightless, which suits the wind.
Do I need any vaccines or malaria pills for the Falklands?
Not for insects. The CDC lists no malaria medicine for the islands and says the yellow fever vaccine is not recommended and not required. Other ports on a South American cruise may have their own rules, so bring the whole itinerary to your pre-trip doctor's visit.
Should I pack repellent for a Falklands cruise?
For the Falklands and Ushuaia, it's optional. A small picaridin spray earns its place if the ship also calls at Buenos Aires or Brazilian ports, where the CDC's advice for each port applies. Wind and rain layers matter more at Stanley and the penguin colonies.
