French Guiana requires a yellow fever shot. Chikungunya and malaria shape the rest of the plan.

Every arriving traveler 1 year and older needs proof of yellow fever vaccination, US arrivals included. A CDC Level 2 notice covers the territory's first chikungunya epidemic since 2014–15, still active in the Savanes sector in October, and the CDC lists malaria medicine for Kourou, Matoury and the gold-mining borderlands.

Are there mosquitoes in French Guiana? Yes, and 2026 has been an outbreak year. French Guiana is having its first chikungunya epidemic since 2014–15, under an active CDC Level 2 travel notice, and the CDC lists malaria medicine for Kourou, Matoury and the gold-mining communes on the borders. The territory also requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from every arriving traveler 1 year and older, including arrivals from the US.

Travel clinicFrench Guiana requires yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travelers 1 year and older, including arrivals from the US. CDC recommends malaria medicine for the gold-mining communes near the Brazil and Suriname borders, especially Régina and Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock, and for Kourou, Matoury and Saint-Élie, and chikungunya vaccine for outbreak areas. See a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before you fly.
When to goBetter: the dry season, roughly August to November, when chikungunya wound down on the western coast and around Cayenne in 2026, though not in the Savanes sector. Worst: the heaviest rains, roughly April to June. Malaria advice for the interior and the Oyapock applies in every month.

The chikungunya notice, in plain terms

The CDC posted its Level 2 notice on June 4, 2026. Its French Guiana page says, "There is an outbreak of chikungunya in French Guiana. Chikungunya vaccination is recommended for people traveling to an area with a chikungunya outbreak." The notice advises pregnant travelers to reconsider travel to the affected areas, particularly close to delivery.

Santé publique France, the French national public health agency, counted 2,130 laboratory-confirmed cases since late January in its October 22 bulletin, with 387 people hospitalized and four deaths among confirmed cases, one caused directly by chikungunya. By mid-October the western coast had been post-epidemic since late September, the Savanes sector was still in epidemic, and the Île de Cayenne had two active clusters. The bulletin's map shows which communes each sector covers.

Dengue has stayed low all year. Chikungunya travels on Aedes, which bites in daylight with peaks after sunrise and in the late afternoon, so repellent goes on over sunscreen at breakfast and again before sunset. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.

Yellow fever and malaria: one clinic visit

The CDC's recommendation is "Vaccine is recommended for all travelers ≥9 months old," and French Guiana's entry requirement is "Vaccine is required for all arriving travelers ≥1 year old." Carry proof with your passport.

The CDC reports no malaria transmission in Cayenne city or in coastal areas west of Kourou, and lists prevention medicine for the areas in the box below. Santé publique France counted 166 malaria cases in 2026 through October 23. A focus in a gold-mining area on the Haut-Maroni, near the Suriname border, was still active then.

What we suggest you do with this: book a travel-medicine appointment 4–6 weeks before departure. French Guiana requires yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travelers 1 year and older, and CDC recommends it for all travelers 9 months and older. CDC recommends malaria medicine for "Areas associated with gold mining, primarily the communes near the border with Brazil and Suriname, especially Régina and Saint-Georges-de-l’Oyapock; also, the communes of Kourou, Matoury, and Saint-Élie", and, with the current outbreak, chikungunya vaccination for travelers visiting an area with a chikungunya outbreak. Bring your exact stops. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest.

River trips, forest camps and when to go

River trips and the interior bite hardest. Forest mosquitoes on the Kourou River have a reputation for biting through clothing, so treat yours with permethrin. In forest and mining areas, malaria mosquitoes bite from dusk to dawn, so sleep under a net in carbets, the hammock shelters used on interior trips.

The dry season, roughly August to November, tends to be easier, and in 2026 chikungunya wound down then on the western coast and around Cayenne. The heaviest rains, roughly April to June, tend to be the worst. Malaria advice for the interior and the Oyapock applies in every month.

Where you're going

city

Cayenne, Rémire-Montjoly & Matoury

Disease risk ElevatedBite nuisance Occasional

CDC reports no malaria transmission in Cayenne city, while neighboring Matoury is a named malaria commune. The Île de Cayenne had two active chikungunya clusters in mid-October, so the daytime routine matters most here.

city

Kourou & the Guiana Space Centre

Disease risk ElevatedBite nuisance Noticeable

CDC names the commune of Kourou among its malaria-medicine areas, so a launch trip needs the clinic conversation. One of the first local chikungunya cases of 2026 lived here, and river trips upstream tend to be the buggiest part of a stay.

island

Îles du Salut: Devil's Island & Île Royale

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Occasional

A boat day trip from Kourou that tends to be light on bites. CDC doesn't say whether the islands fall inside its Kourou malaria area, so ask the clinic, and wear repellent for the day anyway.

city

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni

Disease risk ModerateBite nuisance Noticeable

Where the 2026 chikungunya epidemic began; the western coast has been post-epidemic since late September. CDC reports no malaria transmission in coastal areas west of Kourou, but a gold-mining malaria focus upriver on the Haut-Maroni was active in October, so raise any river trip with the clinic.

The French Guiana kit

Spray for the coast, plus treated clothes and a net for the interior.
  • Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat and layers over sunscreen. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
  • Permethrin 0.5% for river clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt, trousers and socks at home 48 hours before you fly. It goes on fabric, never on skin.
  • A travel bed net for carbets and forest camps.

What travelers report

Paraphrased from a TripAdvisor review and linked so you can read it in full. It isn't dated, and bites on the islands change with the season and the wind.

  • Devil's Island (Îles du Salut)

A reviewer who found the historic penal colony fascinating but very hot and humid did not run into any mosquitoes, though the group had been warned to wear repellent. TripAdvisor ↗

One more rule outlasts the trip. Any fever or joint pain during or after your trip means a doctor visit, and you tell them you were in French Guiana and whether you went upriver. Malaria can show up weeks later.

Traveler questions

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine for French Guiana?

French Guiana requires proof of it. Its entry requirement is "Vaccine is required for all arriving travelers ≥1 year old," and that applies when you arrive from the US. The CDC's recommendation is "Vaccine is recommended for all travelers ≥9 months old." Book a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure and carry proof of vaccination with your passport.

Do I need malaria pills for Cayenne or Kourou?

The CDC reports no malaria transmission in Cayenne city. It does list prevention medicine for the communes of Kourou, Matoury and Saint-Élie and for gold-mining areas near the Brazil and Suriname borders, especially Régina and Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock. Matoury is part of the Cayenne urban area, and the CDC doesn't say whether the Îles du Salut fall inside its Kourou area. Whether that adds up to a prescription for your trip is a call for a travel clinic, made with your exact stops and dates. Our malaria-zone checklist covers the rest of the preparation.

What does the chikungunya notice mean for my trip?

The CDC's Level 2 notice has been active since June 4, 2026, and the CDC recommends chikungunya vaccination for people traveling to an area with a chikungunya outbreak. In mid-October, Santé publique France still rated the Savanes sector as epidemic and reported two active clusters on the Île de Cayenne, while the western coast was post-epidemic. Ask a travel clinic whether the vaccine fits your trip, wear repellent from breakfast on, and check the notice and the agency's latest bulletin the week before you fly.

Is it safe to visit French Guiana while pregnant?

The CDC's chikungunya notice advises pregnant travelers to reconsider travel to the affected areas, particularly close to delivery. Santé publique France recorded three mother-to-newborn transmissions of chikungunya in 2026. The CDC also lists Zika for French Guiana, though no Zika activity was reported in October 2026. Talk to a healthcare provider before you book.
