Are there mosquitoes in Punta Cana? Yes, and 2026 is a busy dengue year.

La Altagracia, the province that holds Punta Cana, Bávaro and Cap Cana, has had more dengue in 2026 than any other part of the Dominican Republic, and the CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine there, resort areas included. Winter is the drier season, and a daytime repellent habit plus a travel-clinic visit covers the trip.
Yes. The day-biting Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue is around the resorts all year, and La Altagracia, the province that holds Punta Cana, Bávaro and Cap Cana, has had more dengue in 2026 than any other part of the Dominican Republic. The CDC also recommends malaria prevention medicine for the province, resort areas included, so a winter trip needs a daytime repellent habit and a travel-clinic visit.
Dengue: La Altagracia leads the country
Dengue is endemic in the Dominican Republic and usually rises with the May to November rains. In 2026 it kept climbing into the fall. The health ministry had 185 confirmed cases nationwide by late July. Its week-40 bulletin, as summarized in a Dominican government news note, counted 415 by early October, with La Altagracia at 131, far ahead of La Romana (37) and Puerto Plata (33). The same note describes fumigation and larva-clearing drives in Higüey and Verón-Bávaro, the district around Bávaro and Punta Cana. On October 20 the Pan American Health Organization reported dengue rising again across the Caribbean.
The mosquito behind it bites in daylight, with peaks after sunrise and before sunset. Repellent goes on over sunscreen at breakfast, again after swimming and again in the late afternoon. Our dengue & Zika routine has the full schedule.
The malaria recommendation
The CDC's Dominican Republic page recommends malaria prevention medicine for the "Provinces (including resort areas) of Azua, Elias Piña, La Altagracia, San Juan, and Santo Domingo" and lists "Atovaquone-proguanil, chloroquine, doxycycline, mefloquine, tafenoquine." The species is P. falciparum, the more dangerous one.
Recorded cases are low. The health ministry counted 133 malaria cases nationwide in the first 33 weeks of 2026, against 712 in the same weeks of 2025, most of them in Azua and San Juan in the southwest. La Altagracia had 9, three of them reported in late August, according to Dominican Today's report of the ministry bulletin.
What we suggest you do with this: book a travel-medicine appointment 4–6 weeks before departure and bring the exact plan: resort only, a Saona or Higüey day trip, or nights elsewhere in the country. A clinician weighs a low case count against a serious species better than a website can. Our malaria-zone checklist covers everything around the prescription.
Malaria mosquitoes bite from dusk to dawn, the hours of open-air dinners and beach bars. Repellent at sunset, long sleeves and light trousers for dinner, balcony doors shut and the air-conditioning on cover most of that exposure. If you find mosquitoes in the room, ask the front desk to spray.
No-see-ums on the sand
On the beach, the common complaint is sand fleas and no-see-ums, tiny biting midges that go for feet and lower legs. They tend to be worse on overcast or rainy days, and resort fogging does little against them. They are weak fliers, so a breezy stretch of beach helps. Put repellent on feet, ankles and calves, sit on a lounger rather than the sand, and rinse your legs before heading back to the room. Our Barbados sand fly guide explains how they behave.
Where you're staying
All four sit in La Altagracia. Scores are for a December–April trip.
Bávaro & Arena Gorda
The heart of the resort coast, in the Verón-Bávaro district where 2026 dengue fumigation drives were reported. Beach no-see-ums are the usual complaint, and some resorts have mosquitoes in gardens and rooms after dark.
Cap Cana & Juanillo
Same province, so the same CDC malaria recommendation applies. Expect occasional bites, and keep the morning repellent habit with a second coat before sunset.
Saona Island day trip
Saona is part of La Altagracia, so the CDC recommendation covers it on paper, but the trip is a daylight boat excursion, usually from Bayahibe, when malaria mosquitoes aren't biting. Daytime repellent for dengue still applies; reapply after swimming.
Higüey & the Basílica
The provincial capital and the other focus of the 2026 fumigation drives. A town has more of the containers the dengue mosquito breeds in than a resort, so wear repellent for the visit.

The Punta Cana kit
- Picaridin 20% travel sprays: odorless in the heat, layers over sunscreen and goes on feet and ankles as easily as arms. One 3.4 oz bottle covers about a week of daily use for one person.
- Permethrin 0.5% for dinner clothes: treat a long-sleeved shirt and light trousers at home 48 hours before you fly. Treated fabric repels and kills mosquitoes on contact through several washes. It goes on clothing, never on skin.
What travelers report
Paraphrased from TripAdvisor forum threads and linked so you can read them in full. None is dated, and bites on this coast change with wind, rain and where you stay.
- Punta Cana resorts
Posters said their resort's mosquito fogging did nothing to stop sand-flea and no-see-um bites. Bites varied a lot within groups: some people got dozens while their companions got none. TripAdvisor ↗
- Punta Cana beaches · overcast or rainy days
Posters said the biting bugs on the beach come out more on overcast or rainy days. They advised rinsing sand off legs and feet before going back to the room and keeping feet off the sand, since bites land on the lower legs. TripAdvisor ↗
- Paradisus Punta Cana (Bávaro) · night
A guest said mosquitoes were awful at night: they killed at least 50 in the room on arrival before the front desk had it sprayed. Everyone in their group of 16 was bitten, one person more than 70 times. TripAdvisor ↗
If you're pregnant, talk to a healthcare provider before you book, since the CDC's Dominican Republic page flags Zika. And any fever during the trip or in the months after it means a doctor visit, and you tell the doctor you were in the Dominican Republic. Dengue usually shows up within two weeks; malaria can take longer.
Traveler questions
Do I need malaria pills for Punta Cana?
The CDC recommends malaria prevention medicine for La Altagracia, the province that holds Punta Cana, Bávaro and Cap Cana, and says resort areas are included. Recorded cases are low: the health ministry counted 9 in the province in the first 33 weeks of 2026. The species there is P. falciparum, the more dangerous one. Whether that adds up to a prescription for your trip is a call for a travel clinic, made with your dates and day trips, 4–6 weeks before departure.
Is dengue a problem in Punta Cana this year?
It's the busiest part of the country for it. A government summary of the health ministry's week-40 bulletin counted 131 confirmed cases in La Altagracia, out of 415 nationwide, by early October 2026. The dengue mosquito bites in daylight, so the protection is repellent over sunscreen in the morning, after swimming and again before sunset.
Why doesn't resort fogging stop the bites on the beach?
Most beach bites in Punta Cana come from no-see-ums and sand fleas, which live in and near the sand, and travelers say the fogging does little against them. Put repellent on feet, ankles and calves, sit on a lounger rather than the sand, and rinse your legs before going back to the room.
Is a Saona Island trip a malaria risk?
Saona is part of La Altagracia, so the CDC recommendation technically covers it. The excursion runs in daylight, and malaria mosquitoes bite from dusk to dawn, so the daytime dengue mosquito is the one to plan for. Mention the trip to your travel clinic with the rest of the itinerary, and reapply repellent after swimming.
