From Bodrum to Kuşadası, evening mosquitoes and tiny night-biting sand flies come out around dinner, and researchers have found the sand flies here carrying the leishmaniasis parasite. West Nile was rare even in 2024, CDC recommends no malaria medicine, and one dusk routine covers both biters.

Yes, and on this coast the sand fly is the one to plan for. From the Bodrum Peninsula to Dalyan, Kuşadası and İzmir, evening mosquitoes and tiny sand flies bite from around dinner into the night, and the sand flies can carry leishmaniasis, with their season peaking in August around Bodrum. West Nile was rare here even in Türkiye's 2024 outbreak, and CDC recommends no malaria medicine, so repellent from dusk and a closed room cover it.

Sand flies and leishmaniasis

Phlebotomine sand flies are tiny, silent flies that bite from dusk to dawn, and they spread leishmaniasis, which CDC lists for Türkiye. In Muğla, the province of Bodrum, Dalyan and Marmaris, a 2016–2017 survey found Leishmania DNA in 24 of 72 sand fly pools, a third of those tested. Around Kuşadası, a 2011 study describes the rural Aydın Mountains as western Türkiye's main focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis, the skin form, and on İzmir's Karaburun peninsula researchers found the parasite in sand flies and dogs.

Sand flies here are mostly a countryside insect. In the Muğla survey, nearly four in five were caught at 650 to 1,300 feet (200–400 m), so hillside villas, village houses and rural restaurants likely carry more exposure than beachfront hotels. Picaridin 20% and DEET 20–30% deter sand flies as well as mosquitoes. A skin sore that doesn't heal in the weeks or months after the trip is a reason to see a doctor.

West Nile is rare on this coast. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) listed 2 cases in Aydın, 1 in Muğla and 1 in İzmir in 2024, the year of Türkiye's largest outbreak, and none since, though Türkiye is missing from its 2026 tables. Muğla's Culex mosquitoes, the West Nile carriers, have been sprayed hard enough to evolve resistance to common insecticides, so bring your own repellent.

No locally acquired dengue, chikungunya or Zika has been reported in Türkiye, though ECDC's April 2026 map shows the daytime tiger mosquito established in İzmir, Aydın and Muğla. CDC lists no malaria medicine and says of yellow fever, "Vaccine is not recommended" and "Vaccine is not required." Our Türkiye briefing covers Istanbul and Cappadocia.

Dalyan, the resorts and Ephesus

Dalyan, the river town between Lake Köyceğiz and İztuzu beach, has the coast's strongest mosquito reputation, and travelers who know it back that up, describing evening and night mosquitoes there in every season. Wear light long sleeves and trousers for dusk boat trips and riverside dinners, and put repellent on everything else.

On the Bodrum Peninsula, from Gümbet and Bitez to Turgutreis and Yalıkavak, bites tend to come in hotel gardens, marinas and open-air bars after dark. Put repellent on before dinner outside and top it up through the evening; our guide to how long repellent lasts helps you time it. Sleep in an air-conditioned or screened room or run a plug-in vaporizer.

Kuşadası is the cruise port for Ephesus, and the ruins at Selçuk are an open, sunny daytime visit, when only the tiger mosquito is likely to bite. A morning coat of repellent covers a shore excursion.

June is the easiest of the summer months. In Muğla, sand flies become active in March, peak in August and drop off sharply from mid-September to early October. A May or early-October trip still calls for the dusk routine.
